The Toasted Owl Cafe
12 S Mikes Pike, Flagstaff, AZ
Crema's Take
“Nestled in Flagstaff, this independent café charms visitors with its whimsical owl-themed décor and genuinely attentive staff who seem to know their regulars by name. Beyond the Instagram-worthy ambiance, the kitchen delivers standout comfort food—from perfectly executed omelets to breakfast tamales made with the kind of care that recalls homemade recipes—paired with quality coffee in a space that buzzes with the kind of friendly energy that makes you want to linger. Fair warning: its intimate size means it gets pleasantly crowded, especially during peak breakfast hours, but the warmth of the place tends to make the wait feel worth it.”

Amazing little place with a unique ambiance - owls everywhere! The staff were attentive and friendly, the food amazing! It was a bit a small and crowded, but nothing so detrimental it took from the overall experience. It is cold in Flaggstaff so be prepaired to wait outside (no accomidations for inside waiting) as it is a popular place and I noticed many made reservations ahead of time (for breakfast) to negate the wait. Aside from this little inconvience (we just waiting in the Santa Fe until they texted us our table was ready) I highly recommend The Toasted Owl Cafe.
Random google search and then also recommended from a friend. So worth it. Thank you Leilani for an amazing experience, you were so kind. I got the prosciutto and Brie omelet she recommended and loved it. The decor you can buy is a fun touch. I got there right when it opened and I could see it getting busy and when it’s warm there is outdoor seating.
Honestly, I was super disappointed. I found this place on Google Maps and thought it would be great. The owl décor is cute, I’ll give them that. But we were told we had to wait 20 minutes and that the patio was “only for guests with pets.” Okay… except while we were waiting outside, we noticed only ONE table even had a pet. The other four or five tables didn’t. And THEN we watched other people come in with no pets and get seated outside. So… what was the reason again?? When we finally sat down, the server gave us menus, water, and coffee, and then just vanished. Nobody checked on us. Meanwhile, all the staff were standing at the front chatting like they were on break. The food? Super average. Definitely not worth the price. Plus they add an extra 5% service fee on top. And all the utensils are just sitting together on a metal rack that does not look clean. On top of that, there were flies everywhere—flying around and landing on the food. Not appetizing. So yeah… cute theme, but the actual experience? Not worth coming back. I still left tips that I shouldn’t. 😞
Update: We had to come back and have the breakfast and it did not disappoint. We got the breakfast tamales, they have a generous amount of meat and the green olive inside is just how mom made them. The pancake is perfection. It is huge and thick and delicious. I also got a chai latte with oat milk. It was very tasty, I wish it had been more on the spicy side but honestly great nonetheless. It was raining so we popped in and got some hot chocolate to go. I can't wait to come back and have a full breakfast because it smelled and looked SO good! It is so cute and eclectic inside and the patio is huge with plenty of tables and umbrellas.
We enjoyed our breakfast. We got seated indoors right away (12:30 on a Friday). Turns out though that a group of six young women were seated behind us and their conversation was lively. We asked to move closer to the front door area. It was much better. And no shade to the young women, they were just catching up and having fun. Plus, the acoustics indoors is quite live. Our server Kayce B was super nice. She brought us waters and coffees right away. We'd already looked at reviews and knew we were splitting a Giant Cinnamon Roll and Breakfast Tacos with Roasted Potatoes. We placed our order and the Giant Cinnamon Roll came out right away. It was sweet and tasty but it was not giant (see pic). Eat the cinnamon roll as soon as it's placed as it turns hard after about 10 minutes. The meal came soon after. It was a lot of food and we're happy we split it. We had scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, ham and ham in our taco. They were served hot and with a cup of salsa on the side. The tacos were real tasty. The roasted potatoes were amazing. So happy they were oven roasted and not deep fried. They were perfectly cooked. Nice and creamy inside and seasoned well too. We have no plans to return to Flagstaff (been here a few times) but we recommend you give The Toasted Owl a try.
