My family went here today. The server (Donnie) was very kind, coffee and bacon was great, and the place is decorated cute. Only complaint was the toast was a little limp. Cute place and I’m happy we now have a diner so close for after church on Sunday!
Good food, good service and good atmosphere. We had breakfast here his past weekend and everything came out fresh and delicious. The grits here are the bomb! Also, I like the fact that all the condiments (ketchup, sugar, jellies, hot sauce, etc.) are on the table. This place is definitely going to be a Cypress local favorite. Give them a try and support small local business!
I ordered online for an early Sunday pickup, and when I arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty. I got the country side skillet with over easy eggs and the avocado toast. The skillet was decent, but the eggs were definitely more over hard than over easy. Unfortunately, the avocado toast was the biggest letdown. At nearly $14, it felt overpriced; honestly, it shouldn’t cost more than $5, if even that. It seemed like there was little effort put into it. I understand they just opened and are still work in progress, but they really need to step up their game.
Cypress Sunrise Cafe is a pleasant, cozy breakfast spot which fills a long-standing gap in the neighborhood's breakfast market. On the corner of Grant and Jones, residents of the area can now enjoy a quality breakfast without driving towards Louetta, 249, or 1960. The menu is quite large, featuring a mix of regional, international, and classic American breakfast cuisines. Regional favorites from the south and southwest are all available: Biscuits and sausage gravy, chicken fried steak and eggs, migas, chilaquiles, a variety of omelets and skillets, and much more. A few dishes from Albania were a joyful surprise to see on the menu, as was the availability of braised beef short ribs on some items like the eggs benedict. Many of the breakfast dishes are served with a choice of hash browns or grits, plus the choice of biscuit, toast, or pancake. I ordered the Illyrian breakfast, which comes with eggs, qebapa (grilled minced meat sausages from the Balkans, or cevapi), ajvar (roasted red pepper sauce), a side of chopped raw onion, and I chose hash browns and a biscuit to go alongside. My dining partner ordered the Classic with scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, and a pancake. It was a bit of a long wait to get the food, and the plates we received did not include everything it should have, but the staff were attentive and quickly brought us the missing items. The Illyrian was excellent. I'd never had qebapa before, but it is now one of my new favorite breakfast items. The outside of the sausages featured a delicate crust while the inside was light and fluffy. They nailed the over-easy eggs, with runny yolks and fully-cooked whites, something that many restaurants cannot seem to do correctly. The hash browns were shredded thin and had a light crisp on the outside that served as a perfect vehicle for the egg yolk, though next time I may ask for the hash browns crispy to see if they can extend the crisp further through the potatoes. The vibrant flavors of the ajvar brought a freshness that balanced against the rest of the plate. The biscuit was dense but also delicate; it appeared to have been opened, lightly seasoned, buttered, and then pan-toasted on the inside before being put back together - perhaps a bit too much butter, though it did keep the biscuit moist. My dining partner did not enjoy her dish as much as I enjoyed mine. After tasting her dish, I thought it was acceptable. The scrambled eggs were not beaten well-enough to fully combine the yolks an whites, so the scramble had distinguishable pieces of each. She enjoyed the plain grits that she could eat as a sweet dish, as opposed to many places which mix in cheese and serve them savory. The quality of the bacon was excellent and pieces were sliced thick; however, you should ask for it crispy if you want crispy bacon, as it was not served that way by default. The pancakes were dense, a little stretchy, and slightly chewy, which to me are qualities of an excellent pancake. If you prefer the light and fluffy (and IMO flavorless) IHOP-style pancakes, as my dining partner does, you may not crave these pancakes. Overall, I'm placing Cypress Sunrise Cafe on my list of area favorites alongside Black Bear Diner and The Flying Biscuit Cafe. The location of this place being closer to my home than either of the other two gives it a leg up. Whether I can get my dining partner to go back with me - I hope so, but we'll see.
A new favorite! My wife and I love breakfast so we decided to give this place a try and they did not disappoint. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. They are a super friendly family run business with excellent food. We will definitely be coming back soon.
