Crema's Take

This Hilo institution is a genuine kava bar where passionate staff like Tara and April will guide you through the nuances of traditional Hawaiian ava with real expertise and warmth. While they do serve excellent coffee, the real draw is their carefully sourced local kava served in generous, smoothly-brewed cups that create the perfect soothing escape from island travel fatigue. The relaxed, comfortable atmosphere and genuinely knowledgeable team make this feel less like a transaction and more like discovering a local secret.

Tara was amazing! Gave me and my partner a great education on Kava. So knowledgeable, go say hi to her! And yes, they sell coffee too, but it's a Kava shop, not an espresso shop. Great coffee too!

Best place for kava we have found yet in our three long trips to the island. Very strong brew, yummy drink options, and at a good price. The servers here are really friendly. They have tons of comfortable seating too if you need a break off your feet. We came back multiple times during our time here!

Stopped into Kava Republic on a whim and it was the perfect way to ease into the day after a hectic morning of travel. The environment inside was soothing and the employee helping us out was very accommodating. She offered us samples of the different kava available and ultimately I went with a combination of their fresh kava and kombucha. Their other kava option was too strong for me personally, tasting almost of tree bark? It caused my mouth to numb out more than I desired. I loved getting to chat with locals who came and went throughout the hour spent there.

We actually thought this was a coffee place but the person behind the bar explained to us the types of Kava they have. We ordered the fresh locally grown Awa which was much smoother than other kavas we have tasted in Hawaii previously.
