Crema's Take
“This Kiwi-owned gem in Carlsbad Village is all about authentic New Zealand meat pies that transport you straight to Auckland—the sausage and fennel rolls and beef mince pies are revelatory, and owner Richard's genuine warmth makes every visit feel like catching up with an old friend. Beyond the stellar pies, you'll find a thoughtfully curated menu of pastries, light breakfast fare, and excellent coffee in a space that's genuinely family-friendly and built for lingering. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it, and locals are already treating it as Carlsbad's best-kept secret.”

We were so excited to learn about this new Kiwi-owned cafe. The meat pies are authentic and delicious, the owner Richard is incredibly friendly and my kids were so excited to finally find a coffee shop that offers fluffies — or babyccinos if you’re an Aussie. For my fellow Americans, it’s a small steamed milk with cocoa powder or cinnamon and a marshmallow. My toddler especially grew to love them so much while we lived for a short time in Sydney, and no one does them here! Highly recommend giving this little spot a visit.
Awesome meat pies! Was in NZ a year ago and had amazing meat pies and this was no different. Had a sausage and fennel roll and beef mince pie and both were insane! Cant wait to come back again.
Best Aussie pie I’ve ever had. Coffee is amazing. 1 min walk from Revolution Roasters and so much more satisfying. Best cafe in Carlsbad Village 100%. Very happy find!
Just visited, this morning. Rich gave us his story, on how he found Carlsbad. (Worked here, back in '99.) Got the brisket/gr. beef meat pie, and chocolate croissant, and the cheddar cheese scone. All 3 items are on point. 100%. So, here are a few pics I took, randomly.
I wanted to check out Café Dawny because I heard they were a NZ cafe and made meat pies. I’ve tried the meat pie, sausage roll, cheese scone, and orange cake, and man. Delicious. The portions are really generous too, so you could definitely split the food if you wanted to. If you like fresh, homemade style food and an assortment of GF desserts without the fake sugar taste, you have to turn up to support Cafe Dawny. Management is super nice too; I’d love to see this place stick around for many years!
