Crema's Take

Tucked in Old Village Mount Pleasant, this charming café has earned devoted fans for its thoughtfully pulled espresso drinks and house-made pastries that pair perfectly with their spacious outdoor patio—a ideal refuge after exploring nearby Pitt Street Bridge. The genuinely warm staff and community-focused vibe make it as much a gathering spot for friends as it is a serious coffee destination, where quality drinks and baked goods justify making it a regular habit.

I reached out to get a cake that was going to be symbolizing a ribbon cutting for my Grand Opening. I sent inspo picks and a clear detailed email of what I wanted the cake to look like. My opening was Galentines themed. I received correspondence back stating clarity from owner on understanding what I wanted and price. I expressed my excitement again as this cake was super special for such a big milestone. Cake was picked up Sunday a little before noon. Sat out on the cake platter and was cut around 3. I have a video of how hard the cake was when trying to cut. It lifted off of the plate, I had to push with a little force the knife down, the knife didn’t just slide out and no cake was on the knife. It also didn’t have a ribbon on it or decorated as I had requested. The cherries were sloppy that were placed on top and with lack of care. All around poor poor quality. I called Monday morning to speak with them about how stale and hard the cake was. Mind you I paid $150. I was told the FOH Manager who I spoke with didn’t handle BOH the owner/baker did. They would let her know I reached out to give me a call. I heard nothing so I sent an email to her Wednesday with the video expressing in detail the situation and quality of cake. I heard nothing. I was patient due to it being Valentines week, but come Saturday morning I heard nothing and called back. FOH Manager expressed she’d reached out and it was inconvenient for me. Jaclyn the owner would be in at 11 and she would speak with her. I heard nothing. Sunday call again nothing was done and was told Jaclyn had had a family emergency and had left Saturday. Finally got an email from Jaclyn said her son had been hospitalization and she would call me Tuesday. I expressed my sympathies and explained how I hadn’t heard anything back for the 6 days prior to her emergency that I sent my well wishes for. I never received a call Tuesday or heard another word from anyone. I was in the industry for 16 yrs, I am a mother. I have deep knowledge on both. I do not like to typically leave bad reviews but this experience was absolutely absurd. I’ve included a few photos bc I can not upload the video. However photos fall short have the extent of how bad this cake was. As they do not show the cake lifting off the platter. I would have looked past the design not being what requested, as it was terrible, if it had been edible and there were ribbons to represent the whole point of having the cake, a ribbon cutting.

Charming café in the Old Village of Mt Pleasant, with an outdoor patio. Perfect lunch spot after a walk to the Pitt Street Bridge park.

We got drawn in to Gala Cafe & Bakery by the large, delicious- looking coconut cake someone raved about. It turns out this was actually their weakest link, but fortunately the other things we bought were excellent. The almond joy dessert is rich and flavorful and just delicious. The pear amaretto cake is amazing and would be just perfect with a cup of morning coffee. As mentioned, the coconut cake - skip it. Dry, extremely sweet, barely any coconut flavor. Portions are huge (good for splitting). Service is friendly. Ambiance is charming. Parking is extremely limited.

The most adorable cafe in Mount Pleasant!!! Stopped in this morning before leaving South Carolina and I’m so glad that I did! The staff was incredibly friendly, the coffee was so good and the pastries were delicious! I wish I had discovered this place earlier on, on my trip because I would have been there everyday! The area sounding Gala Cafe and Bakery is absolutely amazing, so stop by, sit on their porch and enjoy the area!
