Crema's Take
“This beloved Portland spot masterfully blends serious specialty coffee with curated books and genuine hospitality, creating an unhurried third space where espresso lovers and readers feel equally at home. The owners clearly care about every detail—from sourcing thoughtful beans like Great North to hand-crafting excellent matcha and hojicha lattes—and that warmth extends to regulars and wanderers alike. It's the kind of place where 30 minutes turns into a cherished discovery, whether you're hunting for an uncommon book or just soaking in the calm, welcoming vibe.”

This spot was a last minute addition after a trip out of town. We spent about 30 minutes here. I perused the books after ordering, and found one that was interesting. I got a hot chai with (i think) coconut milk and a breakfast sandwich. the sandwich was good and the Chai was very tasty and a great temperature! i spent 10 or 15 minutes reading the book then went up to ask how much it cost. it was a good deal so i bought it! The only thing Id say preventing me from choosing 5 stars is the lack of accessibility in the building, that would usually bring my review down more but in certain parts of town i understand the difficulty in finding flat and accessible retail space. i use a cane and the big coffee table in the middle of the room was open, so that was some disabled luck! it was easy to get in and out of my seat. some of the smaller, seated height tables around the space were a bit harder to get around. Once more people came in, it made actually looking at the books hard while folks waiting in front of them (no where else to wait) to wait in line. some of the employees sat across from us to take a break or seemingly after shift, and they talked with us which was really nice! the place was very homey.
Great third place for writers & readers. Amazing as a coffee shop. Genuinely in a sea of good beans I really enjoyed their flavor profiles from Great North. Plus they made me decaf by request as it was after 5 pm.
My partner and I come here almost every weekend for our coffee. This place is definitely a hidden gem the coffee is top notch, and I love the vibe. It’s very calm, and they’re deeply involved in the community by hosting book clubs and even story time for kids. It’s genuinely a very wholesome place.
A gem. Made all the more special because the owners are warm, genuine people. Great matcha and hojicha lattes. High quality book events and selection of books that are not easy to find in other mainstream bookshops. It was fun to see folks who were regulars come in and chat with staff. Will definitely continue to support this community space!
Could not possibly recommend this place more! It's amazing. If you like books, coffee, or just chilling at a VERY cool, welcoming, perfectly Portland-y hangout, then you will absolutely love BOLD Coffee and Books. It is truly the best of all those worlds. The owners are the best, and every employee is beyond sweet and helpful. My family enjoyed our first Storytime there today, and we were delighted by a reading by the actual author! The food and drinks are worth every penny, and I was able to complete my Christmas shopping while we were there. Overall, it was a fun, fabulous experience and I literally can't wait to go back every week for more Storytimes!
