McGrath's Variety Store

131 Main St, Bar Harbor, ME

★★★★★4.5(62 Google reviews)

Crema's Take

Tucked into Bar Harbor, this charming old-school variety store doubles as a coffee destination where you're just as likely to be greeted by Oscar the chocolate lab as you are to discover a smooth cappuccino or rotating homemade gelato flavor. The appeal here goes beyond the cup—it's the whimsical mix of a working variety store filled with gifts and candy, the genuine warmth of the staff, and that rare quality of feeling like you've stumbled onto a real local gem rather than a polished coffee shop. Whether you're passing through on a road trip or a regular who knows Oscar by name, McGrath's offers the kind of memorable, unhurried stop that makes small-town Maine special.

Went to this little quaint shop on a whim during a roadtrip, and turned out to be a very memorable stop on my entire trip in Maine. My cappuccino was tasty & smooth. I was greeted at the door by Oscar, the sweet lab. Owner/barista was friendly. I'm sad this can't be my daily coffee stop.

Very charming, old school variety store with gifts, candy, and home made gelato. The flavors are changing and delicious. It's a sweet treat that's hard to beat!

This is such a nice place to stop if you're in northeast harbor! They have a great iced mocha, the staff is super friendly, and last time I was in I got to see Oscar! The sweet, lovable chocolate lab! Definitely turned a rough morning into a great day. I highly recommend

The store was fun! The staff friendly and prompt. But I ordered a vanilla latte and it just tasted bad.

Cute little store! Would have loved some gelato if it wasn't out of season. Coffee was good. I appreciated that stationery paper was available for purchase, even though I didn't need any.
