Soseki Café
227 S Dubuque St, Iowa City, IA
Crema's Take
“Soseki Café brings unexpected depth to Iowa City with thoughtfully crafted sushi and poke bowls that rival what you'd find in major cities, plus a serene atmosphere that feels equally suited for a quick coffee run or a lingering afternoon. Beyond the impressive Japanese cuisine, their matcha tea and specialty drinks pair beautifully with fresh-baked pastries and rolls, while the genuinely kind service and calm vibe make it a natural gathering spot for both solo coffee moments and unhurried meals with friends.”

3.5 stars if half stars were possible. Honestly surprised by the food quality! I got the Vegas and honey roll and both were really good and priced well. The food was fresh and the rice was a great consistency- not mushy- and the tempura shrimp was really crispy. Definitely more of a fast casual feeling place- not somewhere you want to sit down and stay awhile. The views of the sidewalk and parking ramp aren’t the best, but i imagine if you placed an order to go and were staying at the graduate, it would probably be a really good situation. The service is a little slow, even when there was only one other seated table there. Overall good but wouldn’t choose over other sushi places. However, in immediate downtown Iowa city, it’s one of the better options. UPDATE: went back about a year after my first visit and ran into a similar situation. This place seems to run off to-go orders, which is fine, but it means if you’re dining in you are going to be waiting quite a while for your food. Overall the atmosphere is pretty chaotic. Lots of noise from the open kitchen and running around. It’s just not a relaxing place at all. Their sushi is good, but I found the pricing to be insane this time around. $18 for a six piece roll. Insane to me. Additionally, the lesser priced rolls are sooooo tiny. Less than a bite size. I stand pretty firm on my 3.5 review.
It was me and my boyfriends first time visiting this restaurant, we were super pleased with not onlt the calm and kind atmosphere but also the quickness in service & how great our sushi was!! Very good quality & their Smoothies are to die for! 10 out of 10 would reccomend & we will def be back!!😁
There was a fly constantly flying around us. I expected the water to at least be filtered with this price of food. And their Taiwanese Beef Noodles sucks—the beef wasn’t tender enough to be able to eat with their chopsticks and their soup spoon. Overall a bad experience.
First time to this restaurant and to Iowa City for that matter! My daughter ordered an 8 piece Crazy Horse and Jasmine Green Tea to go. A set of chopsticks were given. She really enjoyed it. Very authentic and fresh! Full menu of authentic Japanese cuisine. Order was taken and prepared efficiently. Very happy with the service. Fun little stop along our route!
Great place for sushi and poke bowls. Our family agreed this was some of the best sushi we have had in a long time outside a major metropolitan area. Service was quick and servers were super nice. They were short staffed so certain things were unavailable, which is understandable in our current environment.
