BW Blacksmith Coffee & Grill | 20th

Crema's Take
“Tucked on 20th in Billings, this independent spot masterfully blends coffee shop culture with a full grill menu, earning passionate fans for their unexpectedly excellent fries, sandwiches, and standout items like their peanut butter torte. While the drive-through keeps things quick and convenient for regulars grabbing daily coffee, the kitchen can get stretched when orders pile up, so those seeking a leisurely café experience might find the fast-casual vibe a bit chaotic. The loyal crowd keeps coming back for the dependable burgers and wraps, though some long-time patrons sense the quality wavering lately.”

I used to love this place but I feel as if its slowly going downhill. My coworkers and I order food dang near everyday since its close and we have short lunches. Usually I pull up to pick up the food and its done and ready within 5-10 mins max. Lately ive been waiting 10-20 minutes sometimes longer. The last 5-6 times they've forgotten sauces etc. Ordered a bagel with cream cheese and I get a plain bagel with no cream cheese in a cup or anything. I really like their food but the service i feel is going downhill. Few days ago I was waiting 25 minutes for my food. Finally walked in because I had to go back to work and my food was sitting on the counter and the gal behind the counter was sitting on the ground on her phone. Not only was i waiting forever but its -10° outside and im just wasting gas sitting there. Love this place but the service needs to be fixed. Some ladies are super nice and do everything great!
This place is a gem! Their food is delicious, and on our latest visit, we got their INCREDIBLE FRIES and a peanut butter torte, which was EXQUISITE as well. I especially enjoyed coming later, as the setting sun added perfectly to the relaxing ambiance. Window seats are great. However, on a recent visit, I had to wash my hands while my family ordered, and I soon discovered the faucet did not work, this was very unpleasant, but I know for next time. The service is okay, nothing outstanding, but I do recommend the Fizz Pops.
Every time I’ve come here, I’ve gone through the drive through and I’ve enjoyed the coffee. However, when I add food or a sandwich with my order, it just seems to take forever. I ordered a sandwhich and two coffees and was happy to see the food came with a side. I had two cars in front of me that already ordered and were waiting at the window. I don’t think it should’ve taken 15 mins to get my food and drinks and their prices also seemed a bit high. It cost $27 for two coffees and a sandwich. The chuckwagon sandwhich was really good and quality seemed decent! The coffee wasn’t bad but seemed a little watered down and not much flavor this round. I like that they offered soy milk and other non dairy options. The lady at the window offered to throw an extra shot of coffee in my coffee because I couldn’t really taste it but i didn’t want to bother. I will go back in the future, but my recommendation is make sure you have time and don’t mind spending more than $15 on a sandwich/burger.
We have been going here to this location for over a year, and it really never disappoints. The crunchy chicken wrap, or salad are the best, oh and the burgers are great along with those stained fries! I always grab a bag of beans to go for the week, love the fresh ground coffee during the week! Then if you time it right they have some really awesome desserts, cheese cakes, carrot cakes, all kinds of stuff. I forgot to mention that breakfast is really good too, Give it a try, have a seat and relax and enjoy some good food. Friendly staff and clean too
This location is classified on Google as a Café, looks/feels like a fast-food restaurant, but trying to be a coffee shop so I’m not quite sure how to review this location. We came in thinking it was just a coffee shop but after walking in, it’s definitely more fast-food than coffee. You can still feel the remnants of the old Taco Johns it used to be; drive-through, booths, and soda station. We ordered some food and drinks to give it a try; there’s something a little off about being able to order a burger and fries alongside your typical espresso drinks. As a coffee shop, this did not work for me. The coffee is WAY too sweet without much “coffee”. They didn’t know what a macchiato was so I ordered a short triple mocha but from the taste, I’m actually not sure it was made with espresso. It tasted more like a cup of coffee mixed with a hot chocolate packet though the deep-fried pickles might have thrown my taste buds for a loop. I have to say the food was pretty good but doesn’t really stand out compared to other fast-food restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is pleasant enough with their black and white, rustic theme throughout. I think the food is a bit pricy though for what you get considering it’s pretty standard bar food. The staff was really helpful and friendly which was a welcomed introduction upon our entry. Now that I’ve been here once, I can’t say for sure that I’d be back. It’s a hard no on the coffee for me and the food isn’t unique enough for me to consider it over anything else in the area.
