The Line Coffee

Crema's Take

This tiny Berkeley gem near the hospital has become a quiet refuge for people seeking comfort during difficult times, with reliably excellent espresso drinks and genuinely stellar pastries that keep both locals and travelers coming back. The intimate four-seat outdoor space and genuinely warm service create an unexpectedly memorable experience despite—or perhaps because of—the modest size, and their cold brew and carefully balanced lattes show real care in the craft. It's the kind of place where the owner knows their regulars by name and the coffee tastes like it was made by someone who actually cares about what's in your cup.

You want sometime for breakfast because you are at the hospital. This is the place, a lot of baked goods, iced and hot chocolate or coffee. Yes it is tiny and has only 4 seats outside, I call it a hole in the wall even tho it is well known.

I’m from out of town and like to visit local independent coffee shops while traveling. The Line may be small but their coffee is a great, the pastries are excellent and service is friendly. While I was here I tried a couple of their pour over coffees and really enjoyed the beans from Guatemala. The chocolate croissants are excellent, and if you get there at opening and you have one straight from the oven. A great place. I wish them the best and I look forward coming back when I return. I hope you enjoy it too.

I've been coming here on occasion while seeing my son in the NICU nearby, and the coffee and the service is always top notch. The cold brew with a hint of cream and ice is perfect no matter the weather, and the breakfast options are also delicious: I've had the ham and cheese croissant, the spinach and kale croissant, and the artichoke quiche, and I honestly can't tell which one I enjoyed more, they were all so good.

This review is more of a confession of my disappointment and sadness to the owners. My coffee is great every time—especially when the young barista is there (chef’s kiss). But more times than I can count, I’ve waited in line and ended up leaving without my coffee :(. The sweet gentleman who’s usually there just takes his time with every drink, and while I appreciate care, it’s often too slow. Sometimes I leave home 15 minutes early, and if there’s no line, I still have a few minutes to catch my bus. But if there are people ahead of me, there goes my chance of enjoying my well-deserved coffee.

My favorite little hole in the wall coffee shop! The coffee is great, pastries are great, and the owner is so sweet. Their lattes are fantastic — they have a good espresso-to-milk ratio (I hate when lattes taste like milk with a hint of coffee) and the flavored ones aren’t too sweet! Do yourself a favor and try the spinach kale croissant too.
