The Rook & Pawn

294 W Washington St, Athens, GA

Crema's Take

This board game café in downtown Athens brings coffee culture and tabletop gaming together in a genuinely welcoming space where you can linger over a Cubano con leche or matcha while diving into a game with friends. The vibe is cozy and inclusive—regulars and first-time visitors alike find themselves at home here, though service consistency seems to fluctuate depending on staffing levels. It's the kind of place where an afternoon disappears happily over good coffee, friendly conversation, and the click of game pieces.

I honestly had a very disappointing experience at Rook & Pawn the other day, and I am a regular player/buyer here! The skinny barista with red in her hair was extremely rude and unprofessional the entire time I was there. The customer service was terrible, and I did not feel welcomed at all throughout the whole experience. She was also on her phone a lot instead of focusing on customers, which made the atmosphere feel dismissive and uncomfortable. When people come to a place like this, they expect friendly service and a welcoming environment, and that was definitely not the case. She honestly doesn’t seem like the typical fit for a barista role and should be evaluated by management immediately. If this behavior continues, I genuinely don’t see how Rook & Pawn will be able to keep regulars or attract customers while she’s working there. She's also very passive aggressive towards my friend of color that I invited along with me for the experience, the energy there was disgusting. Overall, very disappointing experience.

I’m a barista at a very busy cafe. Here was slow, with only one person staffing. The matcha I got tasted only like milk and wasn’t green at all (showing the lack of matcha) and yet he did prepared it the proper way so something’s up with their measurements. For almost $8, I expect to taste my matcha.

Coffee is good, and normally I enjoy this place. However today there is a female barista, she has brown hair with red dyed pieces in it, and she is not creating a good customer service experience. I came in with my boyfriend to enjoy a drink and chill game, and the barista is very loudly complaining about how she “hates men” to someone at the bar and is actively ignoring the line of customers. She has been on her phone showing texts to her friend at the bar, making loud comments about how “men suck and should not have feelings”, while the line is nearly out the door. She also was busy talking/complaining to the friend when we came in, and we (along with others in line) had to wait for that to be done before getting to order. I don’t know her name, and I’m sure she isn’t a bad person, but I just wanted to put my customer service experience out there to management as I was a barista for 4 years and would never treat customers this way or create an unprofessional environment by having my phone out and loudly reading my texts about how I “hate men” and how “men shouldn’t have feelings” to people at the bar.

Walked in by myself as someone who’d never been in Athens before, ordered a coffee I’d never tried (Cubano con leche), and yet I still felt at home. The atmosphere is friendly and cozy, the staff are friendly and welcoming, and the food is delicious. I would highly recommend a visit whether you’re just passing through or a local.
