Lysee
44 E 21st St, New York, NY
Crema's Take
“Lysée feels more like stepping into an edible art gallery than a typical coffee shop, with a stunning second-floor pastry display that showcases meticulously crafted desserts where savory and sweet elements dance together in unexpected ways. Beyond the visual spectacle, this is where coffee takes a backseat to their signature creations like the namesake Lysée cake and seasonal hot chocolates, paired with thoughtful breakfast offerings in a intimate, reservation-worthy space staffed by genuinely warm people. It's the kind of place where you linger over every bite, appreciating both the technical precision and creative ambition behind each plate.”

What a wonderful meal to start the day! We got a reservation at 11 and were greeted by smiley & kind staff. The hot chocolate and sujungwa latte were so delicious. All the desserts were so beautiful and scrumptious! Our favorites were the winter citrous tart and, of course, the Lysee. The corn and kouign amann were so delicious as well. We will definitely be back again because there were so many things on the menu we didn't try (and we want to try them all!)
Absolutely loved the deserts at lysee. Got the very important chocolate cake, the namesake(the lysee) and petit Jardin. I loved the savory elements in their deserts. The lysee was savory, crunchy and salty with caramel and toasted brown rice. The petit Jardin had calamari cream on top and if you like coconut is the choice for you. The chocolate cake was a very good chocolate cake but my least favorite of the three. The packaging and presentation were spectacular. Will definitely be back here. Would rank over levain or Dominique ansel IMO
The cakes are beautiful and meticulously done. You can see and taste how much work went into them. They are delicate and the flavors are well-balanced. We had the corn cake (which really tasted like corn), the classic Lysée cake (the one that looks like their logo), the pineapple basil tart (Petit Jardin) and the Asian pear tart (Pear-Yuja). The pineapple basil tart was pineapple-forward with subtle basil and coconut flavor. All of the cakes were good but especially the Asian pear one stood out to me — the flavors were so light and refreshing which went really well with the buttery crust. We also had the mushroom quiche, which was the only vegetarian savory pastry available. It was so good. Again, you can tell that the chef really knows her craft — harmonious flavors, the puff pastry was buttery, flaky, and crisp on the edges, and it had the right amount of sauce. The craft even continues to their hot beverages. Some of the more unique drinks we had — Sweet Potato Latte and the Sujungwa (Cinnamon- Ginger) — were delicious, well-rounded, and not too sweet. We were a group of 4 so we got to sit in the more secluded room in the back, facing the kitchen, which was cozy and private. The top floor is their “museum” where all of the delicious creations are displayed like art. Definitely higher price point with mushroom quiche at $18.50, small tarts ranging from $16.50 - $18 and signature drinks starting at $9, but well worth a visit for a treat. Our server Robin was knowledgeable on the menu, helpful, attentive, and friendly.
Walking into LYSÉE feels more like visiting a gallery than a bakery. The second floor is a stunning showcase of their pastries, while the first floor offers a cozy (though very small) dine-in area. The pastries are exceptional and hit that perfect "not too sweet" note. The Corn is a must-try! Because the seating is so limited on the first floor, definitely book a reservation ahead of time. It’s a bit of a splurge, but absolutely worth it for a special occasion or a high-quality treat. Chef Eunji Lee’s Michelin expertise really shines through in every bite
Had the 4 item selection with the corn, lysee, fruit tart and the chocolate cake. Every dessert was beautifully made, but found the flavors to be muted. Seasonal hot chocolate was excellent. Beautiful gallery of desserts upstairs where one can order takeout.
