Crema's Take

Alco's is a quirky, no-frills neighborhood institution where you're the architect of your own sandwich at their build-it-yourself counter, with the price determined by weight—it's equal parts deli efficiency and mild gamble. Open 24 hours with a genuine community vibe and genuinely friendly staff, it's the kind of place where locals keep coming back for the independence and value, even if the ownership has shifted over the years.

A deli/donut shop that's open 24hrs where you can also buy sandwiches already made or make your own at the self serve sandwich counter and if you guess the exact dollar and cent amount your sandwich is on them. I've never come close especially since I have no idea what they sell for by the pound.

It's gone thru some owners here. But - they have good food and good sandwiches. I wonder if they still do this. You make a sandwich - then - guess the weight ... if you're within a certain amount - you get the thing for free ---- if not ? You pay by the weight. It was a FUN gamble back in the days.

Whenever I'm in the area I always make a point of stopping here just for the create your own sandwich bar. The price is done by weight (between $7-8/lb, can't remember the exact price) and if you can guess the weight of your sandwich you get it for free. Friendly customer service every time I have been here.

The sandwiches are exactly as I want: no communication barrier between me and my own hands. Good price. Shelves include stuff for humans, houses and cars: tea, toilet cleaner and transmission fluid among them. Guess the price of your deli sandwich and it's free. I guessed too high. Extra star for being open all night.
