Charlotte's reputation is finance and sports. The coffee scene that's developed alongside those things is neither, which is why it's worth knowing. NoDa (North Davidson) is the arts district that built Charlotte's independent culture and has the coffee shops to prove it: Smelly Cat has been the anchor for years and Artisan's Palate runs the stretch of 36th Street that locals actually use. South End has density and the light rail, which means you can do the whole corridor without a car. Plaza Midwood is a neighborhood with opinions, and Amélie's is the institution that everyone references. The city has grown fast and the coffee scene has grown with it. The interesting part: the quality is higher than you'd expect from a city that only recently started caring about these things.

South End
On the light rail, which matters. Giddy Goat on The Plaza, Coco and the Director on W Trade. More business crowd in the morning, better for a quick stop.
Plaza Midwood
Amélie's is the neighborhood landmark and the reason most people know the street. The surrounding blocks have developed their own coffee options as the neighborhood has grown.
Uptown
Central Business District with the corresponding coffee options. Good for a morning before meetings. Not where Charlotte locals spend their weekend mornings.

- 03Charlotte traffic is real. If you're driving to multiple neighborhoods, plan a route rather than improvising. The city spreads out in every direction.
- 04Amélie's has multiple Charlotte locations. The Plaza Midwood original on E 36th Street has the most neighborhood character. The Uptown location is more convenient if you're staying downtown.
