Sacramento Coffee: Temple, Old Soul, and the Capital's Serious Side
California's capital city has been quietly building one of the state's best coffee scenes.

The Quick Shot
Sacramento's best specialty coffee runs through Midtown, the R Street Corridor, and Oak Park. Top shops include Temple Coffee, Old Soul at the Weatherstone, Orphan in Oak Park, and Tower Cafe on Broadway, with hidden gems like Classy Hippie Tea Co on Broadway, Balance Coffee Shop in Midtown, and Chez Luc's French Cafe on Fulton. Crema tracks 156 independent shops in Sacramento, chains excluded.
Sacramento gets overlooked in the California coffee conversation. San Francisco takes the specialty credit. Los Angeles takes the trend credit. Sacramento gets nothing, which is both wrong and useful if you're the kind of person who finds value in discovering things before they're obvious. Temple Coffee has built a roasting program that would be taken seriously in any city in the country. Old Soul has anchored the Weatherstone building for years in the way that only a coffee shop with real neighborhood roots can. The R Street Corridor is a converted railroad infrastructure district that Sacramento turned into a walkable food and coffee destination. The grid system downtown makes navigation honest. The farmers market on Saturdays is one of the better ones in California. This is not a backup plan for San Francisco. It's its own thing.
Local Grounds
Midtown
The most walkable coffee neighborhood in the city. K Street and the cross streets running off it have multiple serious options. Temple has two locations here.
R Street Corridor
Converted railroad infrastructure turned food and coffee district. Orphan Coffee at 3440 C St is the anchor. Good for a Saturday morning before the farmers market.
Broadway Corridor
Tower Cafe has been on Broadway since the neighborhood was different. Old Soul at 40 Acres is a few blocks east. The corridor rewards a long morning walk.
Downtown
Temple's K Street location serves the office and government crowd. Reliable, fast, consistent. Not where Sacramento's best coffee lives but close enough to matter.
Worth the Grind
Barista’s Notes
- 01Sacramento's grid system makes navigation genuinely easy. Addresses make sense here in a way they don't in most California cities.
- 02The Saturday farmers market at Cesar Chavez Plaza is one of the best in the state. Plan a coffee stop before it and walk over. Both are better for the combination.
- 03Temple Coffee has three locations in Midtown and downtown. They're consistent across all of them. The S Street location has the best room.
- 04The R Street Corridor is compact and walkable. Orphan to the surrounding blocks on C and R Streets is a manageable morning loop.
- 05Sacramento summers hit 100 degrees regularly. The good coffee shops open early and the morning window before 10am is the right time to be outside.
