City Market/Onion River Co-op
82 S Winooski Ave, Winooski, VT
Crema's Take
“This beloved co-op in Winooski pairs serious grocery selection with a welcoming cafe vibe, making it an easy spot to grab a quality coffee and pastry while you're stocking up on organic staples and local finds. Reviewers rave about the spacious, clean atmosphere and the fact that they genuinely have everything, from specialty ingredients to prepared foods, though be prepared for prices that reflect the quality and community-focused mission. It's the kind of place where regulars have been showing up for decades, drawn back by the combination of thoughtful sourcing and a genuine sense of being part of something bigger than a typical market run.”

*Senior discount policy change! If you are a senior and you expect to get the “senior discount” here then below is a cautionary tale. This place used to be my go to. I’ve been a member here for easily 10 years. They used to make things right. NOT SO MUCH ANYMORE! Customer service is meh at best. Here’s today’s problem. I’m a senior. They have a senior discount. You get it at 60. I didn’t know and I missed it for almost 2 years though because it’s buried in their web info somewhere. So I finally started using it last month. But now TODAY there’s a policy change. I now have to APPLY for the discount. Wait what? Yeah, I have to apply for the discount. Meanwhile, they have ALL of my information and they know damn well that I’m eligible. This is something that can be easily remedied. They could just simply ATTACH the discount to my membership. This way when someone turns 60, they get a nice little surprise at the register. But noooooooo. Instead, they gave me a hard time and they said that I had to fill out this application and that someone would look at it and then and only then, they MIGHT issue me a gift card and I could just swing by and get it. Imagine. This place used to be a nice place to shop. Now however, the prices are THROUGH the roof. Everyone is in a rush like we’re in NYC and there’s not even a bathroom anymore. Parking is a mess and there’s all kinds of nefarious characters outside begging and acting weird. Customer service is a complete waste of time. It didn’t used to be this way. It’s probably time for me to move on. I did NOT like my experience today. 🚮
If it weren’t for the cold weather, I’d think about moving to Burlington just to shop here. They got it all! It ain’t cheap, but they got it, ALL of it. It’s like what you’d imagine Whole Foods to be like if Bozos hadn’t bought it. It’s like a crunchy small town coop, but it’s the OG small town coop. Nice salad bar, great coffee, sweet beer selection, affordable buttermilk options, cheese for days, crackers for crackers, produce in a winter wasteland…. Okay, I’m done. Just go on in and enjoy the experience.
Nice crunchy store with a good selection of a little bit of everything. Good for weekly shopping out to pick up ingredients for a quick meal.
Love the Co-op. Always has what we need. Clean. Safe. Affordable. Been going here for 30 years, when the store was down by riverside.
We stopped by this market to get some small snacks. It’s giving me whole food market vibes. The store is spacious. Hot food bar at the door but it’s empty. Lots organic merchandise. Variety of grocery items, home supplies, snacks and drinks. Staff were very nice and helpful. They definitely keep the store clean.
