Crema's Take
“Freedom CAFE is a Muslim-owned Vietnamese café in Winooski that's earned a devoted following for their exceptional banh mi, where generous portions of tender meat are layered into perfectly balanced bread that's sturdy without being tough. Beyond the sandwiches, their specialty drinks like iced Vietnamese milk coffee and fresh limeade, plus treats like nutella buns and sesame balls, create a complete experience that keeps customers coming back and recommending it to friends. The cozy, colorful space with soothing ambience makes it the kind of place where you feel genuinely welcomed, whether you're grabbing a quick coffee or settling in to enjoy lunch.”

First time at this cafe. The atmosphere is cute and cosy and the food is excellent. There is no pork served here, as it's a Muslim café. This means no pate on the bahn mi as they are traditionally made. Some would argue that without pate it's not real bahn mi but I will not get into that debate here. Anyway I didn't have the bahn mi, my friend and I both had the lunch box special with grilled beef. The presentation is very simple and fresh, the beef was delicious, so flavourful. I also had a beef samusa which was so yummy. However, the customer service is basically non-existent (with only 5 people seated in thecafe and 5 staff, nobody greeted us on entry. We stood around for a while then decided to seat ourselves, taking some menus from the counter. After about 10 mins of sitting nobody had acknowledged us so we went to the counter to order. But the most disappointing thing about this cafe is they only use single use packaging - it's all disposable. They have made an effort to get some brown paper "degradable" bowls but there is still a huge amount of unnecessary single use plastic. Knowing what we know about how much single use plastic pollutes the environment and our health, I think businesses should make more of an effort, even if it means washing some dishes. They have plenty of space in the kitchen, and plenty of staff available. I would love to see this business shift away from single use packaging. It would also make the place feel less like a fast food outlet and more like the healthy yummy cafe it is.
I've been enjoying their banh mi for years now and consistently recommend it to others. Yesterday I placed an order to pick up on my way into work but after 30 minutes of looking for my keys, I didn't get to Winooski until after they had closed. They would have been totally justified in locking up for the day, but they saved my order and waved me in so I could grab it. So kind and considerate, this place is great and the folks at the counter are always lovely.
Gorgeous cafe with a colorful and soothing ambience. The highlights were the beef banh mi, the limeade, and the warm nutella bun
Great spot for Vietnamese bahn mi. Bread is not too hard and strong enough for all of the ingredients. Bahn mi meal is great. Chicken sambusa was not dry either. Will definitely be back again to try more of their menu
Got the iced Vietnamese milk coffee, beef banh mi, sesame balls, and coconut bun. Every item was 10/10 — delicious and reasonably priced, especially for how much meat they included in the banh mi and the quality of the coffee. Beef was very flavorful and tender, coffee had excellent flavor. The pastry and sesame balls were also well worth it. The atmosphere was amazing.
