Crema's Take
“This Berkeley roaster has earned a fiercely loyal following over decades for its unfussy, delicious coffee at genuinely reasonable prices—the kind of place where espresso and pour overs are treated with respect but never pretension. Beyond the excellent beans, Uncommon Grounds has built something rare: a welcoming community space with friendly baristas, laptop-friendly tables, and a genuine commitment to employment opportunities for the refugee population. Fair warning though—their hours can be a bit unpredictable, so you might want to call ahead before making the trip.”

We discovered Uncommon Grounds at our favorite restaurant on our wedding anniversary many years ago and have been brewing their coffee beans ever since (perhaps 15 years?) and simply love the freshness, flavor and depth of their different coffees. Especially enamored by their decaf coffee as well. We get compliments from all of our guests, every time, without fail.:)
They also go by the name Uncommon Grounds. It's a local Berkeley roaster. The coffee selection is very good. The prices are also very reasonable. The people are very nice and friendly. They also have a dog, which is cool.
The food and the coffee are great, and the baristas are friendly. However, they have been really inconsistent with their hours. They're scheduled to open early in the morning, and I came by several times at 9am this summer to find then mysteriously closed. Really disappointing :(
Great atmosphere, no frills, cheap, and coffee that is as delicious as it is unpretentious. Good study spot. Major bonus points for working to provide employment with refugee population. Constructive feedback: it is FREEZING in here. Bring coats/scarves/hats!
Amazing coffee (and service). First had their coffee at John Bentley's on Valentine's Day. We brew it daily at home and think it's better (we like the medium/darker roasts) than even the boutique SF coffee places such as Philz, Blue Bottle, Sightglass. Just my opinion - should try for yourself.
