The Original Hot Bagels
695 E Chestnut Hill Rd, Newark, DE
Crema's Take
“This beloved Newark institution has earned a devoted following for their fresh, perfectly chewy bagels that keep customers coming back week after week, making it a genuine must-visit for bagel enthusiasts in the area. The energy here is genuine and bustling—expect a packed house on weekends where you're rubbing shoulders with other locals who know a good thing, though the cozy, cramped interior means service is efficient and straightforward. Stop in for a hot bagel and a coffee with genuine care from staff members who'll go the extra mile to make your visit special.”

Too many workers standing around with a store full of people, if you're working you should be serving customers or cooking or cleaning or something, I go in there today the store is packed full of people and they decide now is the perfect time for a photo shoot and start awkwardly taking pictures of patrons and cashiers while people are waiting on their food without asking a single customer if they're okay with being photographed with a D-SLR the size of my head. Mind you my orders are sitting there getting cold, and nobody has even asked me if I needed help, but they have time for a photo shoot that not only is making the cashiers stop their job in a small yet packed store, you're also making the customers more uncomfortable by not even asking if they want to be photographed. So you're not going to ask me if I need help, and you're not going to ask if I'm okay with being photographed. All while getting paid. Customer service is in a downslide. I will never understand how some people remain employed, but I won't be spending my money here, too much playing around on the job like little kids makes me worried about quality because if customer service is bad you can only guess what else is bad. It's a tiny cramped space and instead of serving the customers, you make them uncomfortable by taking high resolution photos of them, instead of the one thing you get pay you to do, serve food. It's not the runway it's a bagel shop, next time please just flip the eggs or provide some customer service so your customers can go home, we don't want to be there all day just because you do. Some of us want to get on with our day and not spend it in a bagel shop packed like sardines much less being photographed by random people without being asked. If I did that on the clock they'd be trying to call the cops or get me fired but I guess it's fine at this establishment, every business is different I guess but I won't be supporting it
I have been a customer of Original Hot Bagels for so many years. Their bagels are amazing. I treat myself every couple of weeks, on a Sunday, when they are SLAMMED with other customers who enjoy their bagels just as much as I do. Samatha is always so pleasant regardless of how busy they may be. I decided to treat myself to a bagel today and when I realized they closed at 3:00 pm and I had to rush to make it there. They were in the middle of their closing… cleaning, etc. I felt so bad walking in and disrupting their flow. I work in the service industry and know how frustrating it can be to have a customer walk in at close. Like clockwork, Samantha greeted me with kindness and a smile. She gave me the same service she delivers at 2:45 pm that she would have at 10:00 am. That is how you treat and keep loyal customers all the years. Kudos to Samantha and Original Hot Bagels.
If you’re a bagel lover, this spot is a must-visit. Easily one of the best bagel places in the area, they’re known for serving fresh, hot, and perfectly chewy bagels. Their selection of cream cheeses is impressive, ranging from classic plain to unique seasonal flavors. The sandwiches are generously filled and make for a satisfying breakfast or lunch. The staff is friendly, service is quick, and the quality is consistently top-notch. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or picking up a dozen to-go, you won’t be disappointed.
The inside is a little cramped, especially when it is busy. So just be mindful should you have to wait for you order or want to eat inside. The service people are...to the point, which isn't a bad thing, they just don't have the personable touch. But they get your order in and out, the wait was not long for three bagel sandwiches. Solid results. The bagel sandwich I had (sausage, egg, and cheese on an egg bagel), was good. Soft bagel, melted cheese was good, and the sausage was good. I will say it wasn't a home run, but a very solid double, if you get the baseball analogy. I would recommend if you are in the area and crave a serviceable bagel shop. A very respectable option!
Joshua was extremely sweet and helpful with my mother who was visiting from Oregon and had a kerfuffle of a time trying to make her orders - but everything came out delicious! Thank you! 10/10 recommend and will try again whenever in the area!
