Pan Artesanal
3724 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL
Crema's Take
“This weekend-only artisanal bakery in Chicago creates such demand that lines wrap around the block before opening, a testament to their exceptional pan de muerto, chilaquiles tortas, and rotating selection of traditional Mexican pastries. The limited hours (Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to noon) and inventory scarcity mean arriving early is essential, but reviewers consistently agree the quality of their handcrafted breads and breakfast items justify the wait. Fair warning: popularity can sometimes outpace their service speed, so come prepared for a bit of patience to experience some of the city's most authentic and crave-worthy Mexican baked goods.”

This place absolutely lives up to the hype — it was well worth waiting in line for nearly half an hour, and I even arrived before they opened. They’re only open on weekends from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and most items sell out quickly, so plan ahead. Considering the small size of the bakery, the variety they offer is incredible. I honestly haven’t seen this many options in such a compact space anywhere in Chicago. The pricing is also very reasonable, making the experience feel even more worthwhile. I tried the chorizo breakfast sandwich and the steak and egg sandwich, and both were outstanding — fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The steak and egg sandwich was my personal favorite. I also sampled several pastries, including the Mexican hot chocolate roll, strawberry shortcake, and strawberry Danish. Everything was superb — it’s hard to go wrong with anything here. Despite the long line, service is efficient and moves quickly. Overall, an excellent bakery with fantastic food, great value, and an impressive selection. Definitely worth the visit.
The chilaquiles torta was flavorful and not spicy. They have a large variety of pastries but unfortunately by the time it was my turn almost all were gone. I waited one hour in the line and it is very busy. They only open on weekends from 8a to 12p. It would be great of They can expand their times and that might help with the congestion and line. I don't know if I will keep returning since it is a long wait but it is good to try it at least once.
I came here to get pan de muerto and the line was huge. I was 45 minutes in line. The line was moving super slow for the amount people that were getting served. Prices are a little high and they charge you $1.50 for light ice on a drink. I decided to get an horchata iced latte. The drink tasted like agua de horchata. No coffee what so ever. Big disappointment. They didn't have the pan de muerto I was looking for so I got something else instead. The cinnamon roll was good but pricey. To me, it wasn't worth the wait. $28 It was pricey for 2 20 oz drinks and one cinnamon roll.
2 hours in line waiting just for them to sell out and send us home. I wouldn’t recommend this place until they find a better system. They open for 3 hours only Saturday and Sunday and the line is 2 blocks long. People grab multiple boxes so by the time you get to the front after a brutal wait in the cold they are sold out. The bread was good when I had it last year but it’s honestly not worth that kind of experience. Please place a limit on the amount an individual can get or open more often. The bakery has been receiving a lot of well deserved hype for years now. There’s no excuse for this to keep happening it’s losing you loyal customers
I had a bad experience on my first visit. I arrived around 8:30 a.m. and waited in line for about an hour and 45 minutes, paying for parking because I came from the Lincoln Park area. By the time I got inside, there was no artesanal bread left. I think they should be upfront and let people know up to which number the selection will last, so others can decide whether to stay or leave. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d come back.
