The Terlingua Outpost
34 Washington Ave, Portland, ME
Crema's Take
“Tucked into Washington Avenue, this utilitarian-style spot brings approachable espresso-focused drinks alongside creative signature beverages and grab-and-go fare that makes it perfect for a quick caffeine fix or a lingering visit with family. The crew clearly prioritizes hospitality—whether they're gracefully handling equipment mishaps or pointing visitors toward the best spots in Portland—and their willingness to embrace the quirky (they serve beer in boots) keeps things feeling refreshingly unpretentious. Fair warning: some items like the pocket-ritos arrive pre-made, but the genuine warmth of the team and their all-day hours make it a genuine neighborhood anchor worth returning to.”

Such a great addition to Washington Ave. One of the more utilitarian spots on the street. With the all day hours and the convenience of the grab and go stuff. One of a few places in Portland you can get a coffee after 4pm. Additionally, Their cooler is stocked with all the Terlingua favorites such as BBQ meats, take and bake enchiladas, queso dip and a bunch more stuff.
I love Terlingua, but The Outpost felt rushed as a concept and less satisfying in comparison. I ordered both pocket-ritos. I was disappointed to find them pre-made and sitting in heaters – I suspect the quality would be aided by filling them and grilling them per order. The All Day Breakfast (6.5/10) was decent, the Smoked Meat (5/10) was one-noted – more rice than anything. Drowning them in taco sauce no doubt helped. The coffee was mediocre – the mole latte (5.5/10) had a nice spiced flavor, but the espresso was muddy and dull. There was an unpleasant texture on the palette at the end of the cup, as well. The best thing was undoubtedly the sweet kolache (8/10). The yeasty base had a great chew and balanced sweetness. I don't suspect we'll be back soon. For the price, there's better breakfast and coffee with table service.
The crew had a wild coffee machine failure and handled it perfectly. When an espresso machine is possessed by a wild spirit, what is one to do? They handled it. They serve beers in boots. Huge plus. Professionalism under fire? A massive plus. Come here, grab a coffee or a beer before going to the main spot. Come for a beer in a boot. You won’t be mad about it.
Stopped by so my wife could use the bathroom and the ladies working were super kind and gave me instructions on where to go in Portland - it was extremely helpful as I just arrived here. Also the Mexican soda is pretty good and cute.
Happy to be one of your first customers on your opening day. We are visiting Portland from Toronto… The brisket sandwich and the Wilson’s drink were absolutely delicious. Our toddler devoured it!
