Sound Brew Coffee
202 E 500th S, Salt Lake City, UT
Crema's Take
“Sound Brew is where coffee meets culture on Salt Lake City's 200 E and 500 S corner, blending meticulous pour overs and espresso craftsmanship with an infectious HiFi music-focused vibe that makes lingering over a cup feel essential. Their specialty creations—like a distinctive horchata latte and vibrant matcha—showcase genuine care for quality ingredients, though consistency seems to vary across visits. The space works equally well for serious coffee conversations or just soaking in the eclectic atmosphere, though it's worth noting that pricing occasionally misses the mark on value.”

My first time visiting this coffee shop was amazing. The matcha was a beautiful vibrant green and the flavor tasted high quality, which made the experience really memorable. Because of that first visit, I was excited to come back. The second time I visited was on a Saturday, so I completely understand that it was busy and there were a lot of customers. However, when you return expecting the same quality and end up paying over $30 for drinks (including tip), it’s disappointing to receive something very different from the first experience. The matcha I received was brown instead of green, and the flavor was noticeably off. I also noticed what looked like a premade matcha mix instead of the traditional preparation you would expect with ceremonial matcha. For a drink that costs around $9, I think it’s reasonable to expect consistency and quality every time. I still think the shop has great potential because my first visit was good
Fav coffee shop in SLC. Service is amazing. The pour overs are amazing and done so well. Amazing choices of coffees. Plus, the vibe is high and music is amazing. Love that they are HiFi focused. It’s a plus that Fountain Records shares the space too.
Do not order drinks from here. Plain and simple. This is coming from someone who always blesses companies with wonderful reviews. My wife and I ordered two chais and paid $17. What we received were two cups of milk no flavor at all. I tried stirring it thoroughly thinking maybe it had settled but even after mixing, it still tasted like straight milk. For reference, the attached photo is their “banana bread iced chai.” You can clearly see how diluted it looks. There was no depth of flavor, no spice, no richness. Just milk. For $17 I expect an actual chai latte, not a cup of milk. If this is how drinks are consistently made, management seriously needs to reevaluate quality control. Customers are paying specialty coffee prices and should receive specialty drinks. Extremely disappointing experience. Not even gas station quality.
Record shop and coffee?!? Why not. Walked in music was cool vibes. Love the concept and coffee tasted good. I got an horchata latte and while I’ve had many this one tasted unique. I couldn’t put my finger on it. It tasted good but different. The barista was friendly and explained the drinks. Connects to baby’s bagels so if you’re hungry go get yourself a bagel! Consistency is key And every time i come and get a different drink they are always on point with me saying wow this is good. Flavors are on point. Barista is always 100! Vibes are great!
My new favorite coffee shop in SLC area. On the corner of 200 E and 500 S, you'll find this little hip to the hop cafe. Came on a Friday morning and we were greeted with Brazilian funk music. Even at 9am, I found my foot mysteriously tapping to the beat. If you're a fan of vinyls, there's lots here to look through and buy. They even have a section for CD's. I ordered the seasonal Banana Bread Matcha. Loved it. Not super sweet, just right. One of the owners making our order was nice and said to let him know if we had questions. FYI they don't have a large selection of pastries if you're coming here hungry. They have a few tables and couches, but they are affiliated with Baby's Bagels. You can walk right through from Sound Brew to Baby's without exiting the building. The cardamom/mint mocha is super good too. I really like how he emphasizes the coffee with a little sweetness, rather than overshadowing the coffee with TONS of sweetbess. Perfect balance.
