La Monarca Bakery & Cafe
1001 Mission St, South Pasadena, CA
Crema's Take
“La Monarca punches well above its modest South Pasadena footprint, offering far more than the pan dulce that first catches your eye—the menu spans thoughtfully crafted specialty drinks and savory items alongside their celebrated pastries. The tight, energetic space crackles with genuine hospitality and a warmth that keeps people coming back for years, making it equally suited for a solo coffee pause or lingering with family, though timing your visit during quieter hours will let you actually savor the experience. Rich, bold coffee paired with high-quality Mexican pastries and an inviting atmosphere that feels both authentic and intentional is what sets this place apart.”

Many folks think La Monarca as simply a pan dulce bakery; however, there are far more than just some sweet breads that adorn their extensive menu for pastries, savory items, and crafted drinks. This Mexican bakery certainly has a complete list of items that will take many visits. There are even seasonal pastry items and an alignment with the pumpkin spice craze. The incorporation of coffee and Mexican-style chocolates is also pleasantly available. The portion size of tamales and burritos can be of some concern if you're expecting better value and/or are hungry. Paired with a pastry or dessert, you just maybe okay. There is a Soy Chorizo option, which I found to be quite unappetizing. La Monarca here is a good place for a quick stop for a light snack, and a great option if other choices across the street didn't suit your fancy. Parking is street only, so watch the street meters or time limits on the side streets.
Stopped in during my LA stay, and the energy of the staff and the vibe of space were on point. It is a bit small so if it was a busy time I can see how some people get annoyed/frustrated. I had the Cafe Carmen and the Cafe Oaxaca and they were both so delicious! We also had the molletes and they were pretty good. For drinks it’s a 5/5, the options and the taste are better than any chain in the area. The food can definitely be a bit fine tuned. Maybe if I had at it right away it would have been better but 7 minutes after it was cold and the cheese had hardened. I recommend this as it’s quick and easy to get to with plenty of parking around the areas.
The cafe is a delightful place that consistently delivers high-quality pastries, coffee, and an inviting atmosphere. However, what truly sets this location apart is the exceptional customer service provided by Cynthia. From the moment I walked in, Cynthia greeted me with warmth and professionalism. Her friendly demeanor, attentiveness, and genuine care for the customer experience were evident in every interaction. She took the time to offer thoughtful recommendations, ensured my order was perfect, and made me feel truly welcomed. It's rare to encounter someone who brings both heart and excellence to their role the way Cynthia does. She is a wonderful ambassador for La Monarca, and her service is a key reason I look forward to returning. Thank you, Cynthia, for making my visit memorable—you truly elevate the entire experience.
Popped into La Monarca Bakery & Cafe in South Pasadena after a 5-year hiatus, and wow, it’s like nothing’s changed—in the best way! The coffee still has that rich, bold flavor, and the Mexican-style pastries are just as delicious as I remembered. Tried a concha and a café de olla, and both hit the spot. Perfect vibe for a cozy morning or quick catch-up. So glad this place is still killing it. Highly recommend!
Stopped by La Monarca Bakery in Pasadena yesterday for a quick afternoon treat with the family. This charming Mexican bakery offers a welcoming atmosphere and a colorful display of traditional pan dulce that immediately catches your eye when you walk in. The kids were instantly drawn to the conchas (Mexican sweet bread rolls with the distinctive shell pattern on top). They got one and absolutely loved it! The bread was soft and fresh with just the right amount of sweetness, and the crumbly topping had that perfect texture that crumbles just enough without making a mess. Seeing their smiles with sugar-coated lips was worth the visit alone. For the adults, there was the café de olla (traditional Mexican coffee with cinnamon) which had a pleasant scent. We could have also sampled other pastries - the orejas (palmiers) looked deliciously flaky, and the empanadas de guayaba had a nice balance of sweet filling without seeming overpowering. The service was friendly enough, though a bit rushed during the street fair crowd. Prices are reasonable for the quality you're getting - definitely more authentic than what you'd find at chain coffee shops attempting Mexican pastries. What keeps this from being a five-star review is that a couple of the items in the display case seemed like they had been sitting out a bit too long, and the seating area, while clean, is limited and was quite crowded during our visit. That said, La Monarca is a solid neighborhood bakery that offers a genuine taste of Mexican pan dulce in Pasadena. The kids are already asking when we can go back for more conchas, which speaks volumes! If you're in the area and craving something sweet with your coffee, it's definitely worth a visit.
