Black coffee roasting company
South Concourse, Missoula, MT
Crema's Take
“This Missoula roastery gives you direct access to Black Coffee's beans with a focused menu of espresso and pour overs, though consistency issues with sourness in the shots seem to plague the experience. The staff can be hit-or-miss—ranging from genuinely warm and helpful to noticeably disengaged—which adds unpredictability to what should be a straightforward specialty coffee visit. If you're a local looking to support the roastery or just passing through town, the appeal is clear, but you might want to catch them on a good day.”

I haven’t left anything less than a 5 star review in years. The two women working were rude and flat out ignoring customers. The employees were clearly mad people weren’t using the roped off line which is understandable but it’s not organized well so people lined up by the water coolers. People wanted to get in the right line I but if it’s unclear where that line is it’s not really on them. I got a water and ordered a plain cold brew the woman I ordered from didn’t even respond when I asked if I could have a coffee. She just rang it up and walked away. Then she went to make drinks and after about 7 other people behind me got their coffee she started dusting off the counter. A cold brew is arguably the easiest and fastest drink to make. TSA was above and beyond more polite. The breakfast burrito was 90% egg. I understand having a bad day but for the love - please don’t work in customer service if you hate people.
Coffee was good naturally being from Black Coffee Roasting. The girl working was kind and helpful but she was very unfamiliar with BCR coffees, didn’t know what line of coffee they were brewing when I asked 😐 Cups and especially lids they use are very flimsy, not a good thing when you’re trying to take it on the plane with you.
I saw another review about the coffee being sour, but thought that it must have just been a bad day. Nope. The espresso is sour. The staff were friendly and they seemed to have good food, but since we came for espresso, it was a disappointment that the quality of the beans was so poor.
Nice people and really, really sour espresso. if you like a late with lots of sugary syrup/flavor it will be fine and you wont even notice the taste of the espresso. However, if you actually like espresso - it is pretty bad. I am guessing they use the wrong beans or grind.... but it is really sour. I have discussed with them once or twice - but management does not seem interested in changing or improving.
Stoked to see our local rosters brewing up something tasty to get us through our travels!!
