Crema's Take
“Tucked into Key West's bustling streets, this beloved spot strikes an impressive balance between serious coffee craft and irresistible indulgences, with their Cuban coffee drawing as much praise as their legendary oversized cookies and house-made Key lime pie. The intimate space may be small, but it punches well above its weight with thoughtfully sized waffle cones, an impressive array of ice cream and milkshake options, and pastries so aromatic they're worth the visit alone. Whether you're stopping by for a slow coffee moment or hunting down the perfect Key West treat, the genuine care in both their beverages and baked goods makes this a must-return destination.”

This was the second Mattheessen’s location we visited during our week in Key West. The first time was for their amazing PB Fudge Cookie. This time, we came specifically to try their Key lime pie. I realize that food, and especially desserts, can be very personal. Different people and different palates determine what qualifies as “the best.” And in Key West, the debate over who makes the best Key lime pie is very real. I don’t usually dive headfirst into controversy, but I will this time. As you travel around Key West, you’ll hear plenty of strong opinions about what belongs on top of a proper Key lime pie. Some insist that authentic pie must have a meringue topping and dismiss whipped cream as inferior. What often gets overlooked in that debate is the crust. It doesn’t matter how tall the meringue is if the crust falls apart. That’s why Mattheessen’s Key lime pie is my favorite. The filling and the crust are both excellent. The custard is silky and tart, with bright lime flavor, and it sits on a buttery graham cracker crust that’s firm enough to hold its shape from first bite to last. It was delicious all the way through. In a town full of strong opinions about Key lime pie, this one earns my vote.
Hard to fault ice cream in general so this is biased, but they gave me a waffle cone, which I’m sceptical of, but it wasn’t huge! It was the correct size and the ice cream had vertical clearance which is very rare. Loved it! Need to offer sugar cones but that’s ok. Mint choc chip was amazing.
this little place as small as it may seem, is actually amazing. The cookies I didn’t eat them, but the smell that they were giving off was actually amazing. The coffee was so so good. And we had gotten a scoop of birthday cake ice cream. it was real ice cream. The girl working on the counter she was actually super super sweet. I can tell that locals ready to go a lot here and I can definitely tell why. It’s not a tourist trap. The prices are just normal. The cookie sizes are amazing. The price is justifiable. But if you’re definitely coming with your family to the keys and you’re looking for someplace to get ice cream that actually sells good ice cream definitely come here.
Key lime pie was great, probably the best one we had in key west. Cuban coffee was good as well.
Cookies as big as my fist, YES! If you’re looking for a Key West cookie, look no further. Mattheessen’s has got you covered. With every possible ice cream and milkshake options available if you something cool. But if you’re looking for a sweet cookie fix, they have chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and so much more. The lady working behind the counter was polite, friendly and busier than a one arm paper hanger. Please if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, check out Mattheessen’s. You will not be disappointed, enjoy!
