A Tale of Two Visits La Grignote is a gem — when it’s working. Our first visit for breakfast was everything you want from a French café tucked into the heart of Key West. Scratch-made food, incredible atmosphere, and a Bloody Mary that is genuinely one of the best I’ve ever had. Order it spicy, with bacon and pickles — trust me, don’t skip that. We left raving about it and immediately planned to return with more of our group. That second visit is a different story entirely. The Bloody Marys came out without the bacon and pickles we ordered. After flagging it, the server brought out a side plate of bacon for us to garnish our own drinks — not exactly the experience we remembered. We kept it simple for lunch: two bowls of French onion soup. One arrived 20 minutes later. The second took another 20 minutes after that, by which point we’d lost our appetite and our patience. When it came time to pay, I was using Apple Pay — my wallet had been pickpocketed earlier in the trip and my replacement card hadn’t arrived yet. The server refused to run it as credit and called the manager. When we calmly mentioned the service issues while still offering a 20% tip, the manager’s response was to ask us to leave, telling us we had no right to complain. We did exactly that — and left a $68 unpaid check behind, at their direction. The food has real potential. The first visit earned five stars. But how a restaurant handles a difficult moment defines its character — and this one failed that test completely.

La Grignote is pure brunch bliss wrapped in cozy European café charm ✨ The lavender mimosa alone is worth the visit — light, floral, refreshing, and just different enough to feel special without trying too hard. Everything feels fresh, beautifully presented, and genuinely comforting (those waffles are happiness on a plate). The whole space has this relaxed, wander-into-a-postcard energy that makes you want to linger a little longer. Easily one of my favorite little gems in Key West ❤️🥂

First morning after arriving in Key West. I went to watch the sunrise, then stopped here on the way back to the apartment. Food: They have an amazing assortment of pastries and desserts. I ordered a hot chai latte and an almond croissant. Both were good. The chai had nice froth and a decent amount of concentrate, giving it good flavor. It was warm, though it would have been better if it had been hotter. The croissant was good, but there may have been too much filling, which made it soggy in the middle. It was a bit messy to eat. Service: I received a friendly greeting when I arrived. They let me pick a spot out front at a counter overlooking Duval Street. The server came over promptly and took my order. There were plenty of friendly smiles and helpful assistance. Atmosphere: The place is cute, with seating both inside and outside. The outdoor seating is especially nice if you’re by yourself and want either some quiet time or the opportunity to strike up a conversation with others. I’d stop again, and likely try something different next time.

Walking in you immediately understand that everything done there is done properly, and with care. That sounds funny talking about food, but baked goods are topped perfectly, bread is baked to perfection and while the restaurant was definitely busy, the staff is working tirelessly to turn tables over, to get new customers seated. Not just the “staff”, the OWNER! I told him that if the owner is willing to bus his own tables, that is a formula for success, especially in a place like Key West. Now for the food! Just as I saw in when I walked in, everything that arrived on our plates was fresh and delicious. My kids raved about the bacon, and it is served as half sized. Mini bacon strips! Who knew a tiny little change would be such a hit? The eggs Benedict is light and tangy and the waffle comes with a giant dollop of whipped cream. The tables are situated so that even with the small space, you don’t feel cramped. Prices were not ridiculous, but the food and service would have been worth the price, even if they were. Upper area of Duval is a nice change of pace from the downtown vibes.
