Crema's Take

Tucked away in a hidden corner of SoCo Shopping Center, Portola has earned serious respect as Orange County's benchmark for espresso, with a signature light-to-medium roast profile that keeps every shot clean, sweet, and expressive. Their consistently dialed-in drinks and rotating selection of interesting single-origins have inspired years of loyalty from specialty coffee enthusiasts who treat this independent roastery as the standard by which they judge all other shops. Despite the easy-to-miss location, once you step inside you enter a different world—one where the craft and attention to detail in every cup make the hunt entirely worth it.

I've been here for years. I've been to plenty of shops. Portola, consistently, offers the most exciting and interesting coffees and classic, well balanced espressos. There are shops that can pull a good espresso, but can't brew a good drip, and vice versa. Portola nails both, every single time. Not only that, but the baristas here are kind, funny, passionate people who care about what they do. It shows in everything they do. Take a second to engage them as people instead of an obstacle to your next brew, tip them, and discover the joy that comes from them. I'll be coming here for many more years to come

My first time coming over, I was a bit lost on where to find the coffee shop because it says on the building it's at a certain spot but once you go in, you are in a different world like literally. You need to pass all the stores and go to the back and you'll eventually see the sign on the left. The dude who helped me was pretty chill and friendly, he told me that they make most of their ingredients themselves so that's pretty nice if you ask me. He recommended me the vanilla latte as it's their most popular drink, but you can also choose their seasonal items too since we are in the winter season! Overall, very nice little coffe business in Costa Mesa, definitely would come back every now and then.

Portola Coffee Roasters is my benchmark for espresso in OC. The drinks are dialed in with a light-to-medium roast profile that keeps everything clean, sweet, and expressive—never bitter, never muddy. My order here is always a two-stop routine. First, the flat white: silk-fine microfoam, steady warmth, and a rounded sweetness that lets the shot shine. The latte art isn’t just pretty; it’s a sign of how well they texture milk—tight, glossy, and consistent. Then the cortado for contrast: compact, velvety, and a touch brighter, with enough structure to carry through to the last sip. The art still lands on the smaller glass, which tells you everything about the baristas’ control. Service is calm and precise—scales come out, shots get weighed, and milk is steamed to the exact texture rather than “hot.” Turnaround is quick, but nothing feels rushed. The space is uncluttered and easy to settle into, whether you’re grabbing a focused solo coffee or a quick catch-up. If you care about espresso drinks done right, make Portola a regular stop. Flat white for comfort, cortado for clarity—both showcase why their lighter roast approach works so well. Detour-worthy, every time. Also, they sourced their pastries from farm shop, which is phenomenal!!

Love this place! I make a point to stop by anytime I’m in the area. Great variety of drinks and flavors. I’ve noticed most of the bad reviews for this place are from people who were in a hurry or most likely brought a rude energy when ordering (I see it all the time!). I’m not saying that’s an excuse for service to purposely be slow, but what you give is what you get. I’ve always been kind and considerate of the baristas and never waited more than 5 minutes for 3+ drinks (At their worst, maybe closer to 10min if there’s a line). Can’t please everyone!

Portola Coffee Roasters is my top espresso pick when I’m out near SoCo Shopping Center. Always on point. We had an Iced Latte, amazing Banana Cream Matcha Latte and Cappuccino. The atmosphere here is so relaxing. Sitting by the fountain is a huge plus. Staff told me that their slow drip cold brew is a fan favorite. Will have to try it next time.
