Crema's Take

Starter Bakery is an Oakland gem where French pastry expertise shines through in every bite, from buttery croissants that rival those in Paris to perfectly balanced kouign amann and almond-forward pastries that keep people coming back. The small, welcoming space pairs an impressive rotating menu of seasonal offerings with consistently excellent execution—whether you're grabbing a quick coffee and croissant or settling in to explore their extensive baked goods selection. With friendly staff and a focus on quality ingredients and technique, it's the kind of neighborhood bakery that makes you actually excited to see what they're making next.

As a French person, I can tell you that their pastries are very good and the croissant & chocolate croissant are better than in some bakeries in France. The bread and baguette are also very good and it's average price compared to what we see in the Bay Area. I'm not giving 5 stars for the following reasons which I hope they will improve: * The service is slow and the layout is not great. When you go in line, you can't see everything. They should have tiered shelves like in bakeries in France. * What's also impacting the service is the fact that they take a tray, put a sheet on it and all that to bag it after. They should directly bag it (unless it's not to-go). The person serving should also be the person making you pay (instead of marking everything on a piece of paper and the person at the register always ends up verifying what's in the bags). They should visit a bakery in France and learn from the efficiency there. * Most of the time when we order a drink to enjoy there (so not to-go), we get that in a paper cup instead of a mug... * They have one gentleman (probably very nice) in the early shift during the weekend who's also not efficient at all (and always serves my drink in a paper cup).

My friend got it for me and I was honestly impressed, the texture is sooo good! And it’s not too sweet at all for me. I’m definitely gonna stop by in person next time.

Traditional kouign amann was yum! Dense, crispy sugary treat 🥰 Missed the seasonal berry offerings, hope to catch it the next time!

Too many delicious looking pastries to choose from! The almond croissant has a good amount of paste in it and is very almond-foreward. The babka was chocolatey and soft even on the second day. The pecan brioche was nice and not too sweet and almost like a cinnamon roll (would love to try a version with cream cheese in it). Both savory pastries I got were also good, and I almost audibled to a sandwich or quiche because they looked tasty too. My chain was good although I wish I could have reduced the sweetness just a bit All in all a great bakery with friendly people! I will definitely be back to try their bread.

It is a small, pleasant, and clean bakery with friendly staff and a fairly extensive menu. To give a more accurate review, I would need to try more of their products, but from the ones I tried this time, I was slightly disappointed with their Brioche - Pecan Sticky Bun. They were too dry, but the nuts added some flavor. Their Salted Chocolate Chip cookie was average (I didn't taste the salt), but I would definitely recommend trying their Molasses Ginger cookie again.
