Dim Sum Sam
240 W 40th St, New York, NY
Crema's Take
“Dim Sum Sam is a quick-service spot in New York that specializes in traditional dim sum and congee, with standout items like their duck dumplings featuring generous filling and delicate, translucent wrappers. The experience is genuinely hit-or-miss—some guests rave about piping hot, freshly prepared dishes arriving in no time, while others have encountered inconsistent quality and execution. It's best approached as a casual family-friendly grab for when you're craving authentic dim sum and traditional drinks like matcha tea, though managing expectations about consistency might be wise.”

Skip this. I rarely leave a bad review anywhere even if it’s bad but I needed to leave one this time. Edible if VERY hungry, but VERY underwhelming. Meat was gross. Fatty gristle. Sauces were watery. Rice was just yuck. How is rice yuck? And the combo meal comes with one type of drink (Lemon Iced tea) And they won’t let you switch it for anything else not even water! I gave mine away to some random person. Oh and the tables were disgusting and there was nowhere to even set my purse down except for the bench which was slightly cleaner from people sitting on it and wiping it with their rear ends. You also have to eat in a room with zero windows. The room is big and they have like a fake window of a park with some trees but it doesn’t Make-up for the lack of service and the lack of taste in the food. do not be deceived by the photo. Ick. we ate the Combo with barbecue pork over rice and “spicy” mushroom dumplings (not spicy at all Or any other flavor really) and some pork soup dumplings and some barbecue pork steamed buns. All very underwhelming with very little flavor. The only thing that tasted good was the greens in the bowl and the egg. Whatever that white vegetable in the bowl was tasted ok. The Portuguese custard tart was also practically flavorless. Might as well eat air.
I had such a fantastic experience at Dim Sum Sam! Our food arrived in no time, piping hot and freshly prepared, which made the whole dining experience smooth and enjoyable. The portions were absolutely huge — much more generous than we expected! Every dish was packed with flavor and made to perfection. Whether it was the dumplings, buns, or rice rolls, everything tasted authentic and satisfying. You definitely won’t leave hungry here. What impressed me even more was how reasonable the prices were considering the portion sizes and quality. It’s amazing value for money, especially given how fast and well-organized the service is. If you’re looking for delicious dim sum, lightning-fast service, generous portions, and great prices, Dim Sum Sam is the place to go. I’ll definitely be coming back for more! 🥟✨this is a self service restaurant.
We ordered beef, and seafood congee which came in large bowls. Try the duck dumplings. There is a good amount of duck filing and tasty sauce wrapped in a semitransparent dough. The beef and shrimp rice noodle is silky smooth. It goes great with the congee. Price is reasonable. Locals came in and out while we ate here. Good indication it’s authentic and good value. Space is surprisingly HUGE and clean because staff is consistently cleaning tables, floors and facilities. Enjoyed traditional Chinese congee breakfast on this windy cold January day and would recommend a visit.
They will offer you a free drink for a review. They’ll have you show them your review to get the drink. I did not bother. The staff behind counter was not a friendly one, but maybe that is the part that is authentic lol. HK restaurants are known for unfriendly staff. 😂 The food was decent . We got the congee and pork chasu noodles. It was quite decent.
I was surprised by how high the rating is for this place. Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet my expectations. Everything tasted quite bland, and the pork was very dry. The flavors were hard to distinguish, and I honestly wished I had ordered the egg tart instead. The service could also use improvement. The staff didn’t seem very attentive, avoided eye contact, and at one point was eating while helping customers, which didn’t feel very professional.
