Crema's Take

Tucked in the lobby of a hospital in Ypsilanti, Joe's Java punches above its utilitarian setting with genuinely excellent iced coffees and thoughtful specialty drinks like their Dirty Chai that keep regulars coming back. The staff shines through with real knowledge about their pastries and a warmth that feels especially comforting when you're spending long hours at the hospital, making this a rare bright spot in an institutional space. Beyond the espresso bar, there's a surprising depth to their offerings—hot sandwiches, soups, and a connected convenience store with groceries and sushi round out what could easily be overlooked as just another hospital café.

The coffee is good and the food is decent, the 'atmosphere' is efficient as they are in the lobby of a hospital, and the service is amazing. Having spent my 2nd 72-hour stay here with a loved one, their smiles and kindness make me feel like they genuinely care. When met with, "I'm sorry to see you're still here, but it's nice to see you gain", I was reduced to tears. Healing comes in all forms - and the staff at Joe's seems to understand that.

There is clearly no consistent method of making drinks here. Got a cappuccino which was 95% milk, and an Americano that was 95% water; couldn't even taste any coffee in either drink. When I asked to remake the Americano, they gave me 2 shots of espresso with a splash of water. Way to be petty I guess, but I'm not going to remake a drink for the third time, will just leave this 2 star review instead.

We order (2) muffins (red velvet and chip), a Dirty Chai, and a Carmel Macchiato. The staff was informant in muffins flavors and polite. The batista made the beverages very well. The dirty Chai was on point, although the carmel in the macchiato was a bit overkill so had to top off the sweetness with another shot. The muffins were moist and flavorful too!

I went here for a long time before realizing they offer soups and hot sandwiches. You can also get sushi and groceries from the little convenience store next door

Awesome little coffee shop! Their excellent tasting iced coffees kept me awake with our newborn.
