Sweetland Candies
5170 Plainfield Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI
Crema's Take
“Sweetland Candies is a charming hybrid space where a century-old candy shop meets a cozy coffeehouse, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon with family or friends browsing vintage sweets while sipping a thoughtfully made coffee. The warm, community-focused atmosphere shines through in details like customers holding doors and friendly staff, though experiences seem to vary by visit. It's the kind of place where you can grab a pastry and espresso drink alongside a box of homemade chocolates, creating a nostalgic small-town experience that rewards repeat visits.”

First time at this candy/coffee shop. Unfortunately it wasn't a good experience. The coffeeshop is attached to a candy shop, so I took my toddler with me to get a drink and a treat for her. As I was getting my coffee order, my toddler came up to me with tiny thorns covering both her hands. The coffee shop has a cactus right next to the napkin, straw and sugar area, and my toddler must have grabbed it. Now this was a valuable lesson for my child so I'm not annoyed about that (dont touch!), but I did think this was poor placement for a plant like that, and I said so to the shop. 1) it's a candy shop, this prickly plant is at grabbing level for small children 2) it's in an area where there are busy hands, grabbing whatever for their purchased beverages (sugar, etc). Anyone can accidentally knock into it. 3) the staff seemed very unsympathetic. They offered band aids, but that's about it. They seemed unbothered and all had dead fish stares. I know I'm being "that mom", but I think there are other more suitable places for that kind of decoration. I left with a very uncomfortable toddler, I probably won't come back. First time there considering how many times I passed by when they were closed. It was a enjoyable experience looking at all of the candies and peanuts! I got a few chocolates and will definitely be there as soon as possible. Great place and great people. Update...the fldark chocolate with orange is heavenly! Plus the do have some vegan options.
I've been a loyal customer of other locations for the last five years. Unfortunately, my first visit to the lobby of this location was simply appalling. For my work I heavily rely on local coffee shops for their services as a community hub. Although I have had decent experiences with the drive thru for the Plainfield location my first visit inside was absolutely awful. For work I travel and meet survivors of trauma (most frequently sexual or domestic violence but we often meet with survivors of war or gun violence. This includes veterans and people in deep need of honorable treatment.) My volunteers and I met with a couple of individuals whom had recently experienced homelessness and had only just earlier that week found stable housing. I was very excited to share stories amongst our community, buy them coffee, and after some time of sorting out mental health and employment solutions I was going to indulge in a rare treat. My plan was to buy all five of us sweets from this establishment that I had so much respect for. My volunteer team includes one man that has been through an extreme motorcycle accident and has only been released from the hospital very recently and a young woman whom has experienced severe abuse and requires great bravery to exit private spaces and bring herself into the public. I was very proud and excited for each person that I brought into this coffee shop with the reasonable and previously validated expectation that the coffee shop be a good space for seating, beverages, snacks and community. I have met with clients across the entire country and done my work as a nonprofit organization in hundreds of coffee shops. Never in my life have I seen an employee treat any of the people that I meet with in their establishment with such disregard. I initially arrived at the coffee shop at 11 am with the two clients that were excited to start their journey as a stably housed and employed couple! I purchased our 3 coffees and we sat down to begin our work. Maybe about 30 to 45 minutes into our meeting my two volunteers arrived. I also purchased my two volunteers coffee's upon their arrival. The coffee shop had many people bustling back and forth, stepping in from the cold to purchase a coffee and candies only to turn around and step back outside. No one sat on either side of our table and there was clearly no need for us to change our seating to accommodate for new customers. However, just over three hours into us being there ( when I was planning to purchase us candies, (because we had accomplished many of the tasks we had aimed to reach and had started digging into our more proactive work rather than general maintenance) a very tall man with a shrewd face whom I am assuming was either the owner or the manager stepped forward and abruptly asked that we leave. This was handled in a very dismissive and degrading manner. I asked the man how long they usually allow someone to stay after purchasing a coffee and he said " five hours" I pointed out that we had not been there for nearly five hours, but he insisted that we had and that we needed to leave right away. It was made very clear to us that we were not welcome and that this was because of our socioeconomic appearance. For a coffee shop, more specifically, a community hub, this is incredibly disgraceful behavior. I have never in my life seen such disregard for a client, nonetheless, a group of clients by a business owner. More specifically, I've never seen such careless and negligent prejudice executed by a coffee shop employee. I am under the impression that the customer base for this coffee shop is christian. However, I would like to point out the entirely unchristian behavior of the employee in question. Although it might have been noticeable that some of the people with me would be considered "the least of these" it was clear that this man, employed by sweetland's, looked down on us. I would highly recommend finding more compassionate coffee or candy shops to spend your money. The lantern downtown is lovely AND kind.
Consistent quality sweet treats and snacks. We enjoy stopping for a special treat &/or selecting a delicious gift for friends, family, or teachers. Coffee and pastries are delicious too! Depending on how much time we have, we choose either the drive through or inside seating. It's a good spot to get some work done or meet up with a friend. The staff is kind and helpful.
Family-owned business of over 100 years with an excellent selection of fairly priced Valentines gift boxes. Someone held the door for me on my way in, my clerk was excellent, then someone held door for me on the way out. Great experience.
