Tortorice’s Specialty Sandwiches
5401 Tacony St, Philadelphia, PA
Crema's Take
“Unfortunately, Tortorice's Specialty Sandwiches has permanently closed, but it clearly left a lasting impression as a Philadelphia institution that elevated the humble sandwich into something special. Regulars raved about their generously-portioned Italian sandwiches—think Vienna sandwiches layered with chicken cutlets, prosciutto di Parma, fresh mozzarella, and quality ingredients—paired with house-made soups that could easily stretch into two meals. It was the kind of place that inspired genuine devotion, where the owner's charming personality and commitment to doing sandwiches right made it feel like a neighborhood treasure rather than just a quick lunch spot.”

PERMANENTLY CLOSED. SO SAD! I WAS IN PHILLY RECENTLY AND SO LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING ONE OF THEIR SANDWICHES & JUST THE SANDWICH COUNTER REMAINS IN MEMORY. Holy Moly! This is why you come to Philly, to get Italian sandwiches like this! Getting one of their specialty chicken cutlet sandwiches is a must! They take classic Italian style sandwiches and add a cutlet to it which brings it to a whole another level. The flavors work so well together! I got the Vesuvius Sandwich Chicken cutlet, hot sopressata, dry capicola, sharp provolone cheese, fried long hot peppers, blend of hot spices, tomatoes & arugula. The Italian owner is there throwing down the sandwiches himself!
I tried the Vienna sandwich which had chicken cutlets, mozzarella, prosciutto di parma, roasted peppers, arugula, tomato, and balsamic glaze. The sandwich was really good and the portion was generous. The ingredients were fresh. One thing I noticed was that the bread is on the hard side but I like it that way because it prevents sogginess. I will definitely come back. All in all, I recommend this spot!
Don't walk...Run!!! This place has INCREDIBLE SANDWICHES! They also have soup that's made in house. The proportions are enormous which is great for a lunch and then a dinner. It's a chef's kiss kinda place. If you want the best sandwiches in Philadelphia, eat here. The meat was very fresh as well as the veggies and dairy. Very kind owner named William. One of the sweetest shop owners I met. I highly recommend this sandwich shop and cannot wait to go back!
"ARE YOU ON A DIET?" He said 😂 - tell me you love a good sandwich 🥪 Can't get any better than having Italian Sandwiches from PHILLY! I'm literally thinking about this and drooling while sitting on my couch in Chicago haha 😂 more on Instagram @midwestmunching Tortorice's Specialty Sandwiches is a family owned and operated spot in Rittenhouse. Owners grew up in South Philly and kept a lot of the ingredients and concepts fresh + unique based on their experience. This corner shop is cute and has a bunch of bar seats. We grabbed it to go and managed to keep the freshness of the buns within the 10-15min walk. The large sandwiches were $29 each, definitely on the higher end both because of it being an independent store+located in Rittenhouse (downtown, expensive area of Philly) We got the top recommended items from the owner (his favorites): 🥪I got the DA VINCI - Prosciutto, fresh basil, tomato , fig glaze , and shaved Parmigiano + reggiano 🥖🇮🇹Ben got the BROAD STREET BULLY aka spicy old world Italian sandwich (more meat)- hot sopressata, cappicola, provolone, prosciutto, hot pepper + spices Everything was very well balanced and made with love. I watched them slice each piece of meat and cheese fresh in front of us. If you like complex, flavorful, "burst in your mouth" sandwiches with a good bite of a bread , you'd like this! Food came with chips and a small dessert thing . SO GOOD! Can't wait to go back in 1month 😂😂😂 Edit: Came back to try the weekly specials (sponsored) William makes weekly specials that are packed with creativity, love, and seasonal ingredients! This week he made Carmine's and Hattori Hanzō (he names his sandwiches after movies 🎥) 🥖Carmine's: hot sopressata salami, peppercorn asiago, prosciutto, turkey + herb, arugula, herbed olive oil, Italian spices 🥪Hattori Hanzō: sesame crusted tuna, cucumber, carrot, aioli, cilantro, spring onion, herbed oil, avocado William joined this shop about 4 years ago after he moved from New York to Philly. He is trained in southern Italian cuisine & went to business school, so taste, quality, and service always comes first! It's incredible how much he and his business partner has been able to build up this sandwich shop in Rittenhouse. From catering to corporate businesses in '18-19 to surviving the pandemic. Then doing all this while being a single parent and new grandfather Support small business all you can, check out this awesome spot in Rittenhouse Square in Philly! Their weekly special will switch again on Wednesday!
Great addition to Rittenhouse Square! I haven't lived in the area for a few years so was hankering after a hoagie. While Primo is just fine, I wanted a more hometown feel and found Tortorice's. They use Sarcone's rolls and wherever said that the bread was not good should think again. Great crust with nice pillowy crumb is just right. Three meats were top notch and sliced to order as they should be. The tomatoes and arugula were fresh and added great brightness to the sandwich. Must admit these are not usually descriptions I usually use for hoagies so that says something. A very small store so limited seating. On street parking or the garage around the corner off of 20th street of you're driving.
