“This beloved downtown spot nails that nostalgic late-night greasy spoon aesthetic while maintaining pristine cleanliness and genuinely attentive service, making it feel like a perfectly preserved New York institution rather than a gimmick. Their smash burgers are the real draw—expertly crafted with quality beef, crispy fried onions that add surprising sweetness, and soft buns that complete the package every time. Whether you're ducking in for a quick bite or settling in for a longer meal, the retro vibe, warm hospitality, and honest, generous portions at fair prices create the kind of effortless New York experience that keeps people coming back.”

I have been passing by this place for some time now. The moment I entered, I was already greeted with an unique accent by a lovely host. She is very polite, professional, and attentive to all patrons. Eager to finally try their George Motz's Fried Onion Burger (I'm an onion guy), I found myself happily and quietly eating it. The double patties makes it so juicy and filling! It is not greasy unlike other places. And the fried onions adds a bit more of the crips and flavor. The french fries are simple and always great when out of the fryer. The food was simple, but great! And that, sometimes, is all that is needed to make fill up that hunger. Also, the bathroom is clean and big. Definitely recommend coming here for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Hamburger America lives up to the wall clipping that describes it as a “late night downtown greasy burger joint”; and that’s meant as a compliment. The space may evoke that vibe, but it’s immaculately clean with an attentive staff. I came in for lunch, grabbed a seat at the bar, and was taken care of by Christian at the front. He was delightful, attentive, and, dare I say, plucky guy. He even happily snapped a photo with visiting guests. I ordered the fried onion burger, which absolutely delivers on the onion and fully embraces that “greasy” descriptor in the best way. Personally, I’d probably add lettuce and tomato next time (assuming that’s an option) because I’m a bit of a traditionalist, but the burger itself was undeniably delicious. The fries were solid, but not really a standout. I went with water, though honestly a soda might’ve completed the classic experience. All in all, a great spot to pop into for a seriously satisfying burger.
I got a double fried onion burger and some fries. The burger is a great take on a classic smash (of course with the onions adding some sweet depth). The patties are clearly made with good quality beef for the price point, and they had a pretty good seared crust on them. The texture of the bun was perfect for the meat - soft and squishy but not to the point where it's all falling apart. I will say though, I thought the burger could have used more seasoning (especially salt), and was vastly improved when I added some salt, hot sauce, and the pickles. All in all it's a great smash, but I've had better in the city (I hate to say it, but I think smashburger does them best 😭. This place was a lot better than Gotham imo though). The fries were awesome actually, perfectly thin and crispy! Also needed more salt imo but that was an easy fix. The atmosphere also had a really cute diner vibe which I liked a lot. Sitting at the counter looks like it's more fun but I brain farted when talking to the staff so I ended up in the back. (Def request the counter, don’t be like me 😭)
Burger America is hands down one of the best burger spots in New York. The quality is on another level — perfectly smashed patties, juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right every time. The buns are soft, the ingredients are fresh, and you can really taste the attention to detail in every bite. George Motz is also a very nice guy — welcoming, professional, and clearly passionate about what he does. It makes the whole experience even better when the atmosphere matches the food. If you’re looking for a top-tier classic American burger, Burger America is a must-visit.
Just go. Phenomenal experience start to finish. Loved the vibe and atmosphere of how retro it was. The food was quality and a good price. The chilli dog was one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. Burger was so juicy and the fried onions were delicious. I cannot say enough good things about it. Support George Motz. You’ll be happy you went. These are the types of places we miss. Too many chains. This place has so much character and you can tell they care about the food. 10/10 experience
