Crema's Take

Sugar Browns is a Lubbock institution that takes its espresso seriously, with regulars raving about crisp, well-pulled shots that shine in drinks like cortados and lattes alike. The space strikes that rare balance between buzzy and contemplative—packed with friendly, consistent staff who keep things moving even during morning rushes, making it equally suited for solo laptop work or lingering conversations with friends. Beyond the coffee, there's a cozy, well-designed atmosphere and a solid lineup of pastries like their pumpkin chocolate chip bread that give you reason to linger a little longer.

As an avid coffee shop customer, I decided to flop my laptop and work at Sugar Browns. It was a very busy morning crowd but the staff was quick and friendly. There's not much of a "treat" menu but what was available was okay. The coffee was good and the other coffee drinkers are more than happy to share a table with you if your looking for one. It's a nice place to hangout with friends or work.

Very well laid out seating for anything from studying to group sessions. Staff are always courteous and consistent. As a big cortado fan, I’m grateful for their quality espresso pulls. Chai tea is lacklustre, but if you’re coming here, its probably for their espresso anyways. I’d argue they have some of the best in Lubbock

I have been a long time supporter of Sugar Brown’s Coffee. Even when the owners shifted, I wanted to continue to support this iconic Lubbock coffee shop. However, I can no longer stay quiet about my disappointment. When the staff shifted, no one could make a quality cortado except Dylan. Fortunately, she was a great trainer and eventually other baristas learned to master their cortado making skills. There’s still a handful who… can’t. It’s sad to me because some people seem like they’re only there for a paycheck. The passion for quality coffee is non-existent. A couple of weeks ago, I arrived at 7:30am to see the building closed. No sign, no post on social media. Google said they were opened, but that wasn’t the case. I called them to see if someone would answer and communicate the issue, but the phone rang until it went to voicemail. (I’d later find out they had a plumbing issue. But no communication ANYWHERE? C’mon now..) Today, I called to place a to-go order at 7:40am because Google stated “open” at 7:00am. I let the woman know my order and she asked when will I be picking up. I told her “in five minutes.” She proceeded to tell me that they don’t open until 8am (due to the snow storm - I get it) so it won’t be ready until 8:05-8:10. I cancelled the order. It’d help to train the baristas to be upfront about opening hours rather than getting someone’s hopes up just to let them down. I understand that *sometimes* there’s a post on social media updating the hours, but I don’t always utilize social media - especially prior to 8am. As an established business, there needs to be an answering service or hours shifted on Google if there are changes in hours. I’m truly shocked because this is the first time I have ever dealt with such inconsistencies in a local business. I say all of this with grace and accountability. Would highly encourage the owners to meet with the owners from Monomyth Coffee and Gold Stripe Coffee and learn a thing or two.

Very cute and cozy atmosphere. Perfect spot to work, study, or chat with a friend. Coffee was delicious and so was the pumpkin chocolate chip bread. Staff was very nice!

My wife and I came here for some coffee around 9:45 on 11/18. There was a line of 3 people ahead of us, but we only waited about 5-6 minutes to order. We had never been here, but the staff were warm and welcoming and kindly answered all of our questions. My wife got the sugar free decaf vanilla latte, and I got the butter pecan latte. They were both extremely delicious. Best coffee I’ve had in a long time. Not too sweet and absolutely no hints of bitterness. Then we split a breakfast burrito. The burrito was delightful, but a bit pricey for the size. ($6 for what you see in the photo) The green salsa had a big punch of sourness with no spice. It complimented the cheesy bacon flavor of the burrito. Overall, we had a good time and enjoyed some truly excellent coffee.
