Crema's Take

Villaggio Colafrancesco brings an authentic slice of Italy to Birmingham with genuinely excellent espresso drinks and gelato that rivals what you'd find in Rome itself. The shop cultivates a deliberately unplugged atmosphere—think charming living room vibes and a curated gift shop—where you're encouraged to linger over a cappuccino and panini rather than rush through, though note that they do maintain a conservative dress code that's clearly posted. Baristas here clearly care about precision and craft, and regulars return again and again for that perfect cup and the overall warmth of the experience.

This is our favorite coffee shop in Birmingham! The baristas are always great and create the perfect cup of coffee. The dress code and other restrictions are noted pretty visibly throughout. We’ve never had any issues. Highly recommended!

A quaint little place with fantastic coffee and gelato. Both are just as good as what we had in Italy, seriously. It’s so nice to disconnect from your phone for a few minutes and enjoy time with your family. There’s a little area with tonka trucks for kids to play with. Pay attention to the modest dress code and no phones policy.

This was a delightful surprise. We had a sandwich and 3 flavors of gelato and everything was wonderful!! We will definetely go back. So charming. Loved the gift shop and the "living room" and even the bathroom! Need to experience it. You won't miss your cell phone, which you must leave in your car. Good riddance. Thank you to the owner who is giving a generous gift by inviting the public to experience the beauty he has created. God bless!

Terrible woman behind the counter. I arrived to the shop with long sleeves and high next too loose fitting. I was wearing business dress shorts with a belt and dress shoes. I was holding my infant daughter in my arms. As soon as I walked in the door and started showing my baby the ice creams to try, the woman said “you have to leave.” I asked why and she said I was dressed inappropriately. My husband next to me was wearing an old t shirt with shorts above his knees. Nothing was said to him. The employee then went on the ask if I was aware of a modest dress code, and if I could not follow it I was not allowed on the premises. Not just the ice cream shop, but the entire premises. However, again, my husband who had shorts above his knees was not told anything. I then had to hand my baby to my husband while they got ice cream and I wait in the parking lot. My baby also had shorts on above her knees and was not asked to leave…. This establishment is rude, sexist, inconsiderate, and told a mother with a small baby to leave right in front of the baby. I did not cause a scene, I left quietly. I will always tell people how rude and terrible this place is to women and mothers with small children.

Best gelato you’ll ever have unless you go to Rome! This is such a sweet place. They also serve paninis that I haven’t tried yet and there’s a cute general store. It has a conservative dress code so make sure you see the website for details. Nothing crazy just respectful. And they’re only open Thursday -Saturday. Check out its story and connection to Rome. Fabulous!
