Gong Cha - Midtown HTX
510 Gray St, Houston, TX
Crema's Take
“This Midtown Gong Cha is a late-night tea destination where creative seasonal specials like their Neopets collaboration drinks shine brightest, though service can feel rushed during evening hours when the vibe turns more transactional. Regulars swear by their signature combinations—passion fruit green tea with coconut jelly and winter melon milk tea loaded with extra syrup—suggesting the drinks themselves are worth the occasional inconsistency. If you're stopping by close to their 10 pm closing, manage expectations around seating and service attitude, but the quality of their specialty drinks keeps customers coming back.”

I come here pretty often since it’s close by and I get two drinks: a passion fruit green tea with coconut jelly or a winter melon milk tea with extra wintermelon syrup with boba. I will say that everytime I come it does seem like drinks are made kind of inconsistently in regard to taste and sweetness levels even with the same exact order. Customer service isn’t terrible but it isn’t all that great either.
I went last night to get the Neopets special drinks with my husband. It was about 9:35 pm and all of the chairs were flipped up on the tables, so there was nowhere to sit. They close at 10 pm. The employees seemed tired and ready to go home, which I understand. They don’t owe me a smile or cheerfulness. But then my strawberry milk boba was gross. Tasted horribly artificial. Between that, the chairs being up, and the employees’ demeanors, it was a bad experience. I’ll go to Kung Fu Tea instead next time.
After reading the reviews on here I’m not sure if it was the same lady working in the front but she was so arrogant seeming. I asked her what the difference was between peach and lychee oolong in terms of flavor profile (more sweet, sour, etc) and she was trying to make me sound stupid by saying “peach taste like peach and lychee like lychee” yea no duh but the guy next to her was nice enough to answer it appropriately so he was nice and the drink was good but remove that lady from cashier position and have her make drinks since she wants to act smart.
I very much dislike making these sort of reviews, but the girl seemed irritated we were there, and the overall feeling was super awkward. Tea was okay. But was missing what I asked. I went back in, had it added. They almost added weong thing so I asked then to not do that, and then they took original tea and poured it over pudding. Its not cold now... Maybe it was an off day, but not a nice experience. We were on a date, so thanks for that.
To this day, this is the only Gong Cha location I have been to where they put 0% sugar in my drink, even though the label is always correct (70-100%). I order from here every few months just to give it another try, but definitely not worth it to spend $8 for a drink that tastes awful, every single time it tastes like 0% sugar. Other Gong Cha are good, the drinks taste the same in different locations, this one gets them wrong every time. I'll just stop giving them more chances. If you're walking, there's a Kung Fu Tea and a Feng Cha nearby. If you're driving, go to the Sharetea in Rice Village. Don't waste your money at this Gong Cha.
