Crema's Take
“Run by a wonderfully dedicated Vietnamese auntie, The Vinam Cafe serves some of San Diego's most authentic banh mi alongside creative Vietnamese coffee drinks like their standout ube and creme brulee egg coffees that nail the balance of strong espresso with thoughtful flavor. The matcha lattes and cold brew offerings round out a menu that feels personally curated rather than trendy, attracting regulars who appreciate both the quality craftsmanship and the genuine hospitality that comes with every visit.”

Ordered the matcha latte with oat milk half sweetened. For context, I’ve been on the search for good matcha lattes in San Diego and typically make my own at home. The matcha latte tasted like vanilla, was very sweet and I couldn’t really taste any matcha. It also wasn’t made properly because you could see clumps of matcha at the bottom of the drink. It does come with a little piece of toast which was delicious! My husband ordered the Vietnamese coffee half sweetened (not sure what it was called). It was good but not as strong as we typically like Vietnamese coffee. Perfect sweetness though. Unfortunately it was mostly ice :(. We also ordered the shrimp springs rolls which were good. And the bbq pork banh mi, also good but wish there was more pickled carrot and daikon.
Came in right after they opened for the day and it didn’t look like the pastry section was ready for business yet. So I had to order a bbq pork banh mi instead. It was very meh. Not worth $9 at all. I wouldn’t order it again. The milk coffee was strong and the cloud had enough richness and sweetness (not overly sweet), which made the whole drink quite balanced.
We ordered the creme brulee egg cloudfee, brown coffee, meat pie, and ham and egg banh mi (not pictured because we ate it too fast!). The sweet chili sauce it came with was fantastic. Everything was delicious. Ambience was nice and calm. Such a comfortable atmosphere it felt like being at home. Stroller friendly seating. Owner was professional, kind, and very friendly. We will be returning!
First time trying this place and was impressed by the service and taste. I got an ube coffee, the flavors were exactly what I was looking for - strong vietnamese coffee that has the right amount of bitterness and doesn’t have too much condensed milk. The sweet crunchy bread dipped in the ube cream was also delicious. Plus, the owner was extremely friendly, nice and generous. I also got a candy and flan on the house! Will definitely come back and try the rest of the menu! :)
Believe the reviews. This place, operated by the sweetest and most hard working vietnamese auntie ever, serves the banh mi I have ever had in San Diego and maybe in my life. The coffee is on bar with popular SoCal spots like Da Vien or Saigon Coffee, with a potent yet flavorful coffee profile. The ambience is very calming, perfect for studying, reading, or hanging out. All bread and pastries are made in house. Tucked away in a small shopping center, don't miss the turn! I will come back often!
