Crema's Take

This beloved Asheville gem nails the dreamy, intimate bakery experience with phenomenally fresh pastries and an impressive rotating selection of specialty breads that keep locals coming back. The standout cardamom buns are worth seeking out on their own—a remarkable hybrid of cinnamon roll, croissant, and thick bread with a delicate cardamom glaze—though the traditional coffee drinks pair beautifully with whatever pastry catches your eye. While the cozy indoor space fills up quickly, the outdoor seating offers the perfect spot to linger with your coffee and watch the neighborhood wake up, making it feel more like a leisurely escape than a quick grab.

Very good coffee, nice pastries, a bit on a pricier side. Outdoor seating is helpful as the place itself is very small. Overall was worth it :)

Was so hard to choose which pastry to get as they all looked good, but I ended up going classic croissant. Was super packed for a Friday morning so I imagine theyve got a great reputation. Very cozy inside, but it looks like they have a lot more public seating out back. We wanted to order a PSL for our fall festivities but they instead offered us a twist on pumpkin with a 'squash latte' annnd honestly I can understand trying a new flavor but it wasn't a hit 😅 love the creativity though

There are many reviews here about the pastries, which are fantastic, and I wanted to give a shout out to the breads. Some standard breads there every day, some for certain days of the week, some special featured ones, they're all delicious, I don't think I've had one that's a miss. The photos here show a number of breads over the past couple of years, plus an almond croissant. The breads are always well-hydrated, moist enough that you don't necessarily need to add butter or oil (although those are great). Well-raised sourdough, with complex sourdough flavors that aren't overwhelming. They're expensive, yes, and some of them are on the small side. I love that the breads are made with locally stone milled, mostly locally or regionally grown and heirloom grains. I think my favorite is the einkorn bread, but I'll take any of them! I understand the many reviews about the service issues - for years I've braced myself every time I go in, because most of the time there was at least one person who seemed unhappy to have to interact with customers. I went in this week to a pleasant surprise - people behind the counter who I don't think I'd seen before who acted like you'd expect, friendly enough!

Must get cardamom buns! There’s no way to explain it besides saying it’s a combination of a cinnamon roll, croissant, and thick bread all covered in a mildly sweet, cardamom sauce. The texture is unbelievable, and the flavor is slightly subtle but noticeable. The sweetness is just enough for you to understand that it’s a sweet pastry.

You know that picturesque image of a small cute local bakery that comes to mind? The one with phenomenally fresh breads and pastries? Like Kiki’s delivery service quaint? Well that’s pretty much what OWL bakery is. Nestled in west Asheville, this bakery is serving up fresh baked goodness. The lamination and crunch on these pastries are phenomenal. Sweet or savory, you can’t go wrong. I had the strawberry danish and was very pleased. I also had a morning bun, which was delicious. These sell super fast, so if they have them you want to grab one. They’ve also got fresh quiche, but order ahead or come early because that’s a very popular item. Fresh bread is also available and highly recommended, just like everything else. This is a must stop for us every time we are in the area.
