Pink Flamingo

Crema's Take

Pink Flamingo is a sun-soaked State Street gem that turns brunch into an event, with creative dishes like Chilaquiles with birria and a Madison Benny featuring local ham that justify the weekend wait (they'll text you your place in line). Their extensive coffee and drink menu spans traditional espresso drinks to inventive specialty creations, plus thoughtful non-caffeinated options that feel just as considered, and the team's genuine hospitality—from the chef stopping by your table to gracefully handling mishaps—makes this cozy, family-friendly spot feel less like a trendy new cafe and more like a neighborhood institution already.

We went on a Sunday and arrived at 12:25pm. It was packed but we were told it was a 20 minute wait. You can track your place on the list via a link you are texted. We were seated at 115pm. We ordered shortly after being seated but did not receive our food until 2:40pm. We got Pink Pony Pancakes with bacon and the New York and Eggs (add cheese). Pancakes were good. Bacon was not hot. Steak was well seasoned and well cooked. The cheese on the eggs had solidified as if theyd be out for a while. While the waitress checked on us often and was pleasant, we would not return based on the long wait for food. Decor is super cute.

The food was wonderful, and the coffee was perfect. Nice service and glad we got to talk to the chef for a second. Sunny, cozy atmosphere. Madison Benny with local ham was excellent.

Great new cafe on State Street. Food was excellent. Creative dishes nicely presented. And an extensive drink and coffee menu. Lots on NA and no caffeine options. Vegan and GF friendly. Had a Strawberry Matcha Latte that was amazing. Also we had Chiva which is a coffee latte drink with goat milk. Entree was the Pail in the Sand. A crab cake sandwich with onion straws and choice of fries or salad. All yummy and great service.

The food really was excellent (we both got the Chilaquiles with birria) but what really stood out was the customer service. I accidentally knocked over my hot chocolate drink and got it all over myself and the floor. Jaime (I really hope I’m not butchering his name) was incredibly kind. Him and some other staff immediately came over with towels and were super nice about it. He even replaced my drink for free even though it was entirely my own fault for knocking it over. I really appreciated how kind he was and extremely prompt with taking care of us as well!

I was so happy to discover this new place! It used to be Sunroom Cafe, an iconic, busy, sunny little place above State Street, and then got sold during Covid and went downhill. Pink Flamingo has now been here for a couple months and my husband and I went today. I didn’t know what to expect since I still miss Sunroom Cafe so much. But instantly upon opening the door, I could tell it was going to be great. We are both vegan and the menu offers vegan eggs as a substitute to several dishes. I ordered a caramel latte with almond milk (good!) and the Squash Bowl, sub vegan eggs with no sour cream and added avocado. It was SO GOOD! Everything was cooked perfectly, the quinoa was tender and not mushy, a nice proportion of veggies to eggs and potatoes, the avocado was fresh and delicious. It felt great to be here today, sitting next to the window, enjoying the atmosphere… it’s got a great vibe. I also got to meet the owners, they were so sweet and friendly, we chatted for a bit and I can tell they really care about the customers and making a fun dining experience. They even painted the hallways and did a nice job remodeling the bathroom, keeping with the flamingo theme. How fun and cute this place was, I appreciated the vegan accommodations as well. They also seemed open to my suggestion of keeping vegan cheese on hand (easy to keep fresh by freezing and use per request) and I also found out they have vegan chocolate cake! Even tho, as a vegan for over 30 years, I would appreciate the addition of a local vegan pastry or two, I would definitely recommend this place and plan on visiting again and again! It’s sad that Sunroom closed, but I hope this place becomes an iconic part of Madison again; it seems like they have what it takes! Very caring friendly staff as well, making you feel welcomed and that speaks volumes!
