Los Mexicanos Bakery

1522 Fruitvale Ave, Oakland, CA

Crema's Take

This three-decade Oakland institution is beloved for its impossibly fresh conchas and tortas de jamón, with regulars swearing by the quality of the bread and encouraging newcomers to arrive early for the best picks. The no-frills, family-friendly spot serves up genuine Mexican bakery classics alongside fresh-squeezed orange juice, creating the kind of place where memories span generations—folks returning as adults to the same spot their parents brought them as kids. It's the rare neighborhood gem that feels like stepping into someone's kitchen rather than a commercial space, where the simplicity of good ingredients and time-honored recipes speaks louder than ambiance.

Been coming here for almost 30 years. Each bread is delicious, and come early if you want the best concha you've ever had (you must eat a concha when it is still fresh). The tortas are simple, hearty, and fairly priced, and will fuel you up for a long day of work, play, or relaxation. I try to come here as much as I can!

I remember being a little girl and my mom buying me a cheese torta from here. The bread taste like no other and the cheese is so good. I’m happy to see this place is still open after so many years.

I have been going here for over 5 years an last week I got my usual torta de jamon an a ROACH came out of out of under the cheese. I don’t eat cheese that’s the only thing that save me from biting into my torta with a ROACH in it. Do not go there is not a clean establishment.

Small and cozy, always fresh bread and coffee, they also sale tortas del chavo(ham sandwich on a bolillo with queso fresco, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and jalapeños)(they also sale a cheese only one(all the same fixings as I mentioned before, just no ham). This place is a gem.
