Crema's Take

Busy Bee Frozen Custard crafts thoughtfully made frozen custard that genuinely tastes better than the mass-produced alternative, and locals keep coming back for their specialty coffee drinks like the pinon iced coffee blend and caramel coffee milkshakes. The owner and staff create such a genuinely welcoming atmosphere that people find themselves returning multiple times, whether it's a quick grab on a nice Albuquerque street or a slow sit with family, and the quality ingredients and integrity behind the operation have earned real respect from customers who support local businesses.

I was excited to try this custard because I like to support local businesses, especially ones made with integrity and quality, like Burque Bakery, Los Poblanos, and Farm and Table. BusyBee Custard seems just that. But it isn't. Yesterday I ordered a BusyBee chocolate shake with a burger next door at Lavender Cocinita. It came topped with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. How did it taste? Well, a lot like a fast food shake: very sweet, really thick, and it didn't totally melt. I read the ingredients section on the Busy Bee site and found that their custards contained plenty of artificial additives like monodiglycerides and various gums, that are used in highly processed ice creams, like Wendy's Frosty or Freddy's custard. The highly processed substances are called emulsifiers, which are just additives that make their ice cream seem more thick and creamy, but not because there is more butter or cream fat. They are used because they are cheap and they bring down the cost of production versus using real food. But emulsifiers are horrible for gut health. They are in most highly processed foods these days and I avoid them totally. They can destroy the gut lining, which deprives the beneficial gut bacteria of a place to live while allowing bad bacteria to take hold. Heard of leaky gut? Emulsifiers are a main cause. In short, emulsifiers damage your gut biome, which contributes to obesity and metabolic disorders. Emulsifiers and additives make ice cream from a guilty pleasure to an unhealthy one. BusyBee says that they have the "Worlds' Best Ice Cream", but it turns out that it's not much different from artificial and unhealthy fast food custard or ice cream. It was 2 stars for the custard, but knocked to 1 star for the lipstick on a pig marketing.

A must try The pinon iced coffee blend, and the coffee milkshake with caramel were awesome. The staff was also very friendly. It was so good that we stopped at their food truck the next day and received the same quality drinks and service. We will be stopping at Busy Bee everytime that we are in Albuquerque from now on.

I visited Busy Bee Frozen Custard in Los Ranchos the day before New Year’s Eve, and it was a delightful experience! The shop was quiet, but the owner was incredibly kind and friendly. She let me sample a few flavors before I chose one of their festive Christmas flavors in a waffle cone. The custard was so creamy and smooth—absolutely delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and can’t wait to return to try more flavors. Highly recommend checking this place out!
