Crema's Take

Novaria is Pittsburgh's rare gem for Syrian coffee traditions, where you can sip expertly crafted coffees and pastries like date maamoul and baklava in a genuinely cozy, welcoming space that feels both special and unpretentious. The team here clearly cares about making you feel at home, pairing beautiful serveware and thoughtful service with drinks you won't find anywhere else in the city, whether you're settling in with your laptop or grabbing something quick on Penn Avenue. It's the kind of place that keeps people coming back—part specialty coffee destination, part cultural discovery.

Such beautiful serveware! The syrian coffee was as expected. The barista was fairly flat acting like he didn't care much to be there.

Wonderful little coffee shop that I think is also pretty new. It may be the only Syrian coffee shop in Pittsburgh! I got to try their back home latte and the date maamoul. Initially, I had ordered one of their homemade muffins, but they were all out of those, so they replaced it with a date maamoul. This treat was relatively small but still pretty good. Nice filling that’s not too sweet, but pretty crumbly and just not really my type of pastry. I probably wouldn’t get it again. I did really like the back home latte, though. It was the perfect balance of spice, warmth, and sweetness, with hints of date and cardamom. A good chunk of the date paste seemed to settle at the bottom of the cup, though, so maybe give it a little shake if you let it sit. All in all, very quaint and homey. Would like to try more items.

Novaria Coffee Co., located on Penn Avenue in the Strip District, is a must-visit for coffee lovers. Open daily, this third-wave Syrian coffee shop offers counter service, making it perfect for a quick grab-and-go or a cozy spot to relax on their comfy couches. You can also grab a table and get some work done in their welcoming space. Their menu is eclectic, featuring traditional Syrian coffee, Japanese cold brew, pour-overs, and delicious lattes. In addition to their regular menu, they have a secret menu displayed on the counter, adding an element of surprise for adventurous coffee drinkers. I tried the Syrian Coffee, which is served hot only. It consists of coffee, cardamom, and water, accompanied by a tiny sweet. The coffee is rich and flavorful, presented on a gold tray, allowing you to pour it yourself—a super cool touch that enhances the experience. I also sampled their baklava, a delicious, flaky pastry, and grabbed a honey oat vanilla latte to go. I can’t wait to try it! Beyond the great coffee and food, the space itself is charming, and the owner is incredibly friendly. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I’ll definitely be back!
