Crema's Take

Modcup brings serious espresso credentials to Hoboken with their own roastery backing up drinks that earn genuine praise from coffee lovers who've lived everywhere from Seattle to Manhattan. The shop itself has that cozy, Instagram-worthy café charm perfect for settling in with a laptop, though the experience hinges heavily on which barista you get—some are genuinely warm and knowledgeable while others can feel surprisingly curt. If you catch them on a good day and appreciate no-nonsense, quality-focused espresso without the theatrical storytelling, this is the spot.

Barista gave me some long winded story about how the coffee is made using a technique the Nazis brought back from Imperial Japan during WW2...it was really bizarre. I don't want to know my coffee is brewed using Nazi techniques. They also were pretty uptight about putting milk and sugar in the Nazi-inspired coffee. Insanely bizarre experience.

The coffee itself? Honestly… meh. My taste buds were kind of betrayed. But the inside of the place? Adorable. Totally one of those cafés where you want to sit with a laptop pretending to write your bestselling novel. The barista was chill — just a young girl working, nothing to complain about. But paying around $7 for a basic to-go coffee made me feel like I should’ve just hit the Starbucks up the street and called it a day. The only real star of the show was the cup — a cute little to-go cup that made me feel slightly less salty about the whole thing. Not a reusable keepsake or anything… just cute enough for a pic. Aesthetic vibes = elite Coffee = totally forgettable Cup = cute disposable friend

It was my first visit, and when I asked the staff if they had any specialties, the response was simply “coffee.” The drink itself was good, but the lack of warmth from the staff left a sour note. Next time, I’ll opt for a spot with friendlier vibes.

The best espresso in town. They don’t solicit for tips – which is nice these days. They have a roastery in NJ and it’s really good. They do care about coffee. The baristas are the best. Always friendly and they remember a lot of their visitors. Also, they work from 7:30 a.m.! It’s great that you can get your coffee early in the morning and I salute the baristas who are always there so early!

Best coffee I have found in Hoboken! As someone who lived in Seattle and NYC my coffee is very important to me and I had not found a good coffee shop as of it! Really delicious. Yes there is no seating. The display case might not be the best, but the croissants and baked goods are delicious and I am happy to take my amazing coffee to go! So happy this place is here. Yum yum!
