Tandem Coffee + Bakery
742 Congress St, Portland, ME
Crema's Take
“This Portland espresso haven pairs meticulously crafted pour overs and cappuccinos with genuinely exceptional pastries, especially their legendary strawberry jam biscuits—flaky, buttery, and finished with flaky salt for an unexpected kick. The vibe is cozy and intentional, built for slow coffee moments rather than quick grabs, though seating fills up fast, especially on weekend mornings. If you're seeking that rare combination of serious coffee technique and bakery excellence in one warm, unpretentious space, this is worth the early arrival.”

The strawberry jam biscuit is a standout, perfectly flaky with a rich, buttery texture. The jam is fresh and tangy, and the flaky salt on top adds a surprising burst of flavor that takes it to the next level. It's the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Definitely grab one if you're in the area! Tandem Bakery in Portland, Maine, is a must-visit!
Decent breakfast sandwich, amazing banana bread. Dropped by this past weekend to grab their famous breakfast sandwich and some pastries. The store didn’t have a lot of indoor seating, and as expected, it was completely full when we walked in. They had a fairly big outdoor patio, and the locals didn’t seem to mind seating out in freezing temps (or the food was that much worth it), but we waited for a couple minutes for their window counter seats to open up. Their signature biscuit breakfast sandwich was just okay. They compress and griddle the biscuit, which turns it into a dense, structured puck rather than a flaky vessel. Personally prefer a lighter crumb, so the texture felt a bit heavy. The banana bread, though, was really fascinating. The bread on its own wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but came with the most sophisticated topping combo I’ve seen. It had a pool of olive oil trapped by an ungodly amount of cream cheese on top, and I secretly wished they put more oil. I guess it’s similar to dipping fresh sourdough in high quality olive oil, but it hits with a layered collision of sweet, sour, nutty, and salty notes. Coffee was just okay. The malt iced coffee sounded interesting, but it was too bitter, with an odd aftertaste I couldn’t quite get past. Maybe it needed sugar, but it didn’t really click for me as-is.
This is a great place for a coffee or a cappuccino. They have great service, it’s cozy and the inside was warm. The food was great too, with interesting options like an olive oil dish. I had the simply best scone ever. It was crispy and soft at the same time and not too doughy. 10/10 no questions asked. The quiche was also fantastic! It’s a must stop by for sure if you are in the Portland area
Really cute! After seeing them on TikTok as a must try in Portland I took some of my colleagues in for a visit. We arrived on a Sunday right at opening. The earlier the better if you want a seat inside as inside seating is very limited. I ordered a cappuccino, a slice of quiche, and a loaded biscuit to go. The cappuccino was delicious and expertly prepared with a swan in the froth! Super cute. I only wish it was bigger! The quiche was also really tasty, they warmed it but it wasn’t as warm as I would’ve liked. My friends got the biscuits savory and with the strawberry jam. The pimento cheese was awesome and the jam delicious. The biscuits are extremely heavy. I preferred the quiche. Next time maybe the sticky bun, those looked awesome. Service was fine. Not overly friendly by any means. By bill for a SMALL cappuccino, loaded biscuit, and quiche was $20. The location was Obama old service station and it’s in a beautiful historic neighborhood. Glad we went!
My daughter is a local and said I had to pre order and walk over and get biscuits. the biscuits are awesome for sure although I found the coffee, well, just coffee. The staff seemed blank and impersonal at least in the take out area but they are high volume and it's after a holiday. The quiche was very good but would have been better if I warmed it up. This is a very consistent bakery by the reviews and worth a stop. PARKING is an issue so walk if you can. I will add pictures later.
