Babycakes Hillcrest
3795 Fourth Ave, San Diego, CA
Crema's Take
“Babycakes Hillcrest is a cozy neighborhood spot where friendly baristas like Rosie create a welcoming atmosphere perfect for lingering over coffee and pastries with friends or family. While the traditional drinks and baked goods draw a steady crowd, reviews suggest the quality can be inconsistent—some customers rave about the pleasant vibe and personal touches, while others have had disappointing experiences with the pastries themselves. If you're seeking reliable quality and a wider selection, nearby alternatives may be worth exploring, but the genuine warmth of the staff keeps regulars coming back.”

Save your taste buds and money, and walk up the street to Hazel & Jade Bakery, where everything is Vegan and made fresh daily, the selection is MUCH wider, and they offer a rewards system for loyalty. The 3 vegan choices at this place are only made available in small quantities on weekends (apparently vegans don't eat sweets on week days) where each cupcake costs $6.50 and really does not taste special. I've gone separate times to give each of their flavors a try to see if it was just a bad batch of dry, dense cupcakes topped with what tastes exactly like Pillsbury icing. Sadly, a box of cake mix would taste better and be cheaper than the what is sold here.
I found a hair in my cupcake snd its been a consistent issue at this location ☹️ the hair is very faint but it has green on it
This is cozy little coffee shop I heard about yesterday at the grocery store from a guy, whom im told is Jeff, with a pleasant atmosphere. Rosie is the lovely lady behind the counter has very friendly attitude, very welcoming and inviting. As I was writing this review a Babycakes delivery van pulled up, the driver has tattoos, pumping out "Friend like me" from the original Aladdin soundtrack. First impression, I'd leave a little early from Santee for a job to stop by for a coffee.
My husband traveled to San Diego for work, and I couldn’t be there to celebrate his birthday. Determined to surprise him, I searched for nearby bakeries near his address and found Babycakes. Despite not having heard of the bakery or tasted their desserts, I made an online order for delivery. I’m so glad I did because he absolutely loved them. He even said they were the best cupcakes he’s ever tasted.
I lived next to baby cakes on 3rd Ave for a few years and have given them sooo many chances, but these are some of most bland terrible cupcakes I’ve ever had. It honestly enrages me that Baby Cakes continues to be in business when there are tons of smaller, more inventive bakers that actually use quality ingredients who deserve more patronage (see Hazel and Jade right down the street for example, or good ol’ Bread and Cie.) These cupcakes are worse than grocery store quality - the same batters are reused over and over, no real flavors, dry crumbly cake, artificial sugar SYSCO frosting. Disgusting. Places like this keep the culinary bar low in San Diego
