Crema's Take
“This intimate Chicago roastery has earned its stellar reputation on the back of an obsessive commitment to cold brew excellence, with owner Justin personally shepherding every step of the meticulous Kyoto-style brewing process to achieve a remarkably clean and balanced result that keeps customers coming back for regular supplies. The welcoming, artisan-focused atmosphere invites you to linger and sample experimental projects in progress, making a visit feel like stepping into the workshop of a passionate craftsperson rather than a typical coffee shop. Whether you're grabbing a bottle to take home or sitting down for a traditional pour over, you're experiencing coffee made by someone who genuinely cares about every detail.”

Finally tried this place after frequently walking by when it was closed, and wow, the cold brew was so amazing and reasonably priced! I had the dark roast and it was smooth and flavorful but did not taste burnt or bitter at all. Also the guy working was welcoming and fast with the service. Overall I totally recommend and I will definitely be back!
I consider Kyoto Black the best cold brew, period. If you are looking for the highest quality, most balanced, best tasting cold brew of your life, this is it. Justin brews to perfection. You can buy his cold brew at some of the best cafes around town, but I recommend stopping by his shop (hours are limited--plan accordingly) to pick up a bottle of concentrate, so you can enjoy his 5-star product at home on the daily.
Awesome family of artisans churning out an excellent cold brew. If you're able, stopping by in person is a real treat. Justin let me sample some projects he's working on. Hopefully we'll be able to find his stuff in more places across the city soon!
Kyoto Black's cold brew is superb. I picked up a bottle at a little shop in my neighborhood, and after trying it, I immediately ordered 3 pouches of it so I can have it daily. I've had it both hot and cold, and it's smooth and delicious both ways. Justin also has recipes on his website, but I haven't tried any of them yet. If you love good, clean-tasting coffee, you'll love Kyoto Black. Period.
Justin is an excellent example of creative entrepreneurship. The Kyoto style cold brew coffee is so clean and beautiful, nothing else is needed. He handles every part of the process and is a marvelous educator. You can enjoy your coffee, support small business and learn something all at the same time!
