Ben's Bread

Crema's Take
“This beloved Tuscaloosa bakery pairs expertly crafted espresso drinks with genuinely exceptional pastries—croissants, pain au chocolat, and fresh breads that regulars return for week after week. What sets Ben's Bread apart is its warmhearted charm: an honesty system that reflects the pure-hearted owners, cozy scattered seating, and that ineffable quality reviewers keep calling "home"—the kind of place that makes you wish you could visit more often.”

I want to start this review by saying that my first visit to Ben’s Bread was a great experience. I had the opportunity to purchase a loaf, and it was excellent — so good that I wish I could go back and buy it again. Unfortunately, their current purchasing system makes that nearly impossible. Customers have to go on the website every morning at 8:00 AM to reserve available items, but within about 10 seconds of the site opening, everything is already sold out. This system simply doesn’t work for people who genuinely want to purchase their products but never get the chance. I’m sure that if I had the opportunity to try the bread again, I would love it just as much — but with the system set up this way, it doesn’t feel possible. Edit: After reading a comment from Ben’s Bread on my post, I better understood how their preorder system works and how to actually place an order. This Tuesday, I ordered everything I’d been hoping to try, and I was extremely satisfied with every item. Now that I understand the process, the ordering website makes a lot more sense, too. I’m not sure whether the site was updated after my review, but after taking another look, it’s much clearer to me. Ben’s Bread is an amazing spot for the Tuscaloosa community to come together and enjoy great food. I’ll definitely be returning.
It gives nostalgia, home, cozy, & warmth. The "honesty system" is truly cherished here. Peace, Love, Prosperity & Blessings covers this place and tge owners as well. Pure hearts of gold!
I've been getting breads, croissants, pain au chocolat, and a bunch of other goodies from Ben's for the past year or so. It is without a doubt one of the most high quality bakeries in Tuscaloosa. Recently, I decided to get their coffee and stay in for a couple hours doing light work, and I really enjoyed the experience - they added some nice new tables, there's several rooms where you can sit, I prefer the front one with the windows as it gets a lot of light. Their coffee was quite good, and their pastries are always awesome. Highly recommend you try them out, especially if other coffee shops like Monarch, Turbo, or Strange Coffee are a bit too noisy for you to focus.
Update: I can only go to this shop on Saturdays so I look forward to it all week and get upset if I can't go. The only problem I have is that I want everything they have every time. Delicious food and a wonderful small atmosphere. The staff is always smiling and friendly and if the weather is good there is a nice little outdoor area to enjoy the way too many pastries that I get. Just a nice little shop with fantastic pastries. I got a half dozen of the chocolate croissants and a blueberry cream cheese Danish. All were delicious. I have to admit that I expected them to have an espresso machine, but they just have coffee and I don't really drink American coffee. These pastries were so good though, hard to say just how crispy and light they are without trying them. Delicious!
Fresh baked goods - croissants, breads, bagels, danish - with a cozy cafe vibe. The pastries are lighter and less stodgy than those at other local places, but just as sweet. Multiple spaces (booths, patio, living room in the back) to eat, visit, work, relax, away from campus and downtown but still easy to get to. Right now (August 2024), they're expanding their menu, but it's a small local business - they may run out of stuff or not be open all hours, so check their social media before you go.
