Cafe Del Mar

Crema's Take
“Tucked right on the Best Western property in Del Mar, this casual cafe punches above its weight with a surprisingly cute vibe and an impressive breakfast spread that keeps hotel guests and locals coming back. From French toast and waffles to avocado toast and breakfast burritos, they nail the morning routine with consistently good execution and genuinely friendly service. It's the kind of place where you walk in expecting hotel cafe basics and leave pleasantly surprised by the quality and care.”

We were staying at an adjacent hotel and didn't feel like driving anywhere for our evening meal. We walked over and were pleasantly surprised how cute it was and they had a decent selection of entrees. We had fish tacos and a fish sandwich. Delicious and satisfying!
Third breakfast here. Absolutely no complaints. Excellent service, friendly staff and the food was very good. We've had French toast, yogurt bowl, burrito, waffles and avocado toast. It was all delicious with a variety of fresh fruit topping the dishes. (I wish I'd taken pictures to offset other reviews.) Bonus ocean view!
I stayed at Best Western for 3 nights, so I decided to try their onsite cafe. The first night, service was great. I didn't however like that the chicken noodle soup was actually the store bought campbells from the can, but I ate it anyway to soothe my tired/sore throat. I went back the second night and there were different workers than the night before. This time I placed my order for the entire family (who had chosen to eat somewhere else last night). I ordered the burger meal, chicken tenders meal, and for myself I ordered from the kid's menu the mac n cheese bowl that is served with fries as well as another chicken noodle soup. When I was handed our order, I asked about the fries that were to come with the order and the worker became annoyed with me, spun on her heels and stormed off to the kitchen to tell the cook to make fries. The cashier tried to tell me that there are no fries with the order. I said ok nevermind, I'll be back with the menu I picked up last night. I came back with the menu and the cashier said, "You were right". Of course I was, and I was very polite about it and was met with an attitude from the other girl. I also need to mention that the first night I received crackers with my soup, but the 2nd night with this crew, no crackers were given to me. I didn't even mention this to them. The macaroni and cheese was also described on the menu as "macaroni noodles served with melted cheese". It was actually the boxed store brand macaroni cheese that I buy all the time and usually need to add more cheese to; they didn't even do this. I just asked for more ketchup since 2 of the meals came with fries. I was given 3 more ketchup packets. Not nearly enough, but I wasn't going to complain! It was almost as if they wanted to see a reaction from me that would justify their side and make me look bad. I also tipped them generously on the receipt, and now wish I had asked for that receipt back to cross it out. This was the VERY last time I ever tip at a register before getting my food. I've had too much past disappointment with food quality and now disregard from an employee unwilling to accept a small mistake on her part and on my vacation! I was appalled by the treatment and my special needs son witnessed the entire transaction. We decided to eat somewhere else our 3rd night there.
We had dinner on a Tuesday Evening and it was a little disaster. We ordered two burgers with a veggie patty + fries/onion rings. After 10 minutes we were told that only one veggie patty is available. After another 20 minutes I got a burger which had French toast thick bread - I guess they were out of buns and just don’t wanted to say it?! Onion rings were a little burned, fries were wobbly and zucchini sticks were the worst I have ever seen, seemed they were made in the microwave?! Best was the cozy fireplace outside so I recommend getting dinner somewhere else.
Since this cafe is on the premises of the Best Western Del Mar Hotel, we had breakfast here for two mornings. This is a small cafe that is on the premises of the hotel. The staff were very courteous, friendly, and the food was good. Very standard breakfast fare, but a good option if you do not want to walk to other bakeries or coffee shops for breakfast. The food was a little pricey. We had standard fare items like burritos and toast on one day and pancakes and bagels on another but on both days it cost us more than $25 for two people. Good option since there's not a lot other in the area.
