3 Sauces Hainam Chicken Rice 海南鸡饭
2002 S Wentworth Ave, Chicago, IL
Crema's Take
“Tucked away in a basement food court near Chinatown, this spot serves up authentic Hainanese chicken rice that rivals what you'd find in Singapore, with impossibly tender, juicy chicken and deeply flavorful sauces that justify the hunt to find it. The generous portions and fair prices make it an ideal weekday lunch destination where regulars rave about the quality of every component—from the silky bird to the aromatic rice and perfectly balanced dipping sauces. It's the kind of place that defies its casual, hidden-away setting, delivering serious, satisfying comfort food that clearly resonates with folks seeking genuine Southeast Asian flavors in Chicago.”

I've wanted to try Hainanese chicken rice for a really long time and this place did not disappoint. The portions are plentiful for a more than fair price and the food itself is really flavorful, the chicken was delicious and so were the dipping sauces and the chicken soup (likely the broth the chicken is poached in). The dumplings were good as well, tasted a bit like smoked sausage which was unexpected but I can get behind that - the soy sauce for those tasted a bit off, but the one for the chicken was very good and worked well with the dumplings so I shared it with my sister. The place is great and I would gladly return, hopefully the youtiao will be available to order when I get to. Much love from Romania 🫡🫡🫡
It was a little hard to find this place in the basement food court near Chinatown, but the search was definitely worth it! I came by for a weekday lunch with a friend recently -- roughly half the stalls (?) in the food court were empty, and there were plenty of tables available (although the cleanliness left much to be desired...) I ordered the Hainam Chicken Rice, which is a very no-frills plate of poached chicken over a bed of aromatic chicken-broth-cooked rice and the eponymous "3 sauces". The chicken was so tender and easy to chew through -- practically just fell apart in my mouth. The rice was extremely fragrant, with the chicken fat/chicken stock flavour coming through without being too oily/heavy. The three sauces were (1) some grated ginger in oil, (2) soy sauce base with some sweet overtone, and (3) chilli paste / sambal (?) sauce? I loved the sweet soy sauce the most; it went really well with the chicken. We also had the youtiao with soymilk -- also a hit. The youtiao was crispy without being too oily or hard to chew, and the soymilk (unsweetened) tasted fresh and was a lovely complement to both the youtiao and the oilier chicken rice. Overall, the price point was fantastic, and the portion sizes were the perfect size -- enough to be full without being too stuffed. I'd definitely recommend this hidden spot, and I'd love to come back again (maybe to try the fried version of the chicken rice next time!).
I miss Singapore style hainanese chicken rice and I searched and I tried today the Hainanese Chicken Rice at this place, and it did not disappoint! The chicken was tender and juicy, however, it doesn't have much taste compared to Singapore. The rice itself was aromatic, with a subtle richness from the chicken fat. It was perfectly cooked, not too oily, and complemented the chicken perfectly. The accompanying chili sauce added a nice kick, while the soup was light and refreshing. The portions were generous, and the overall experience was satisfying. If you're a fan of this classic dish, this spot is definitely worth a visit.
We opted for the fried chicken rice and spicy dumplings. The dumplings were fine, but honestly looked like they were the frozen kind. The fried chicken rice did not have any of the expected sauces. Instead it was yumyum, soy, and sweet chili... All from bottles. Very disappointing. The food court is an adventure especially if you have not been in one over in Asia.
Love this hainanese chicken place. I didn’t have high expectations since it’s in a food court and I was wrong. Everything is delicious from the chicken to the sauce to the soup. The chicken was soft, tender, and juicy. The rice is well cooked and flavorful on its own. The sauces chili ginger, soy sauce, and garlic made the dish complete. The soup is light and clear. I do wish for more sauces and slightly bigger portions.
