Stella's Coffee Haus
1476 S Pearl St, Denver, CO
Crema's Take
“Stella's Coffee Haus is a spacious Denver favorite with a genuinely warm atmosphere and generous pours that keeps regulars coming back, though coffee quality has become inconsistent under new ownership. The standout here is really the experience—excellent outdoor seating, plenty of nooks for different moods, and a dog-friendly policy make it perfect for lingering with friends or a mentee, even if the wifi-free policy is a deliberate choice to encourage genuine connection. The food edges ahead of the drinks, so come for the vibe and company rather than expecting the specialty coffee expertise the place once was known for.”

A mere shadow of its former self. Years ago, this business was run by bonafide, enthusiastic, coffee connoisseurs. Thinking this was still the case, I asked for the specialized coffee I used to order – having had it originally suggested to me at this very place – by name. My request was met with confusion. So I asked for their recommendation by generic coffee type, and I was informed that they served exactly ONE "medium roast" coffee** I ordered my usual dairy latte. It didn't taste burned – as that big Seattle chain's coffee sometimes does – yet was otherwise undistinguished. As in: nowhere near as good as what Dunkin Donuts serves over the counter – more like the Maxwell House I buy at the grocery store, if it's on sale. Certainly not worth what it cost, not counting tip. The atmosphere – it's a converted house – has lost its former, genuine, shabby chic funkyness to a too-perfect and clinically well coordinated remodel. I guess I sound like some bitter old boomer by this point. So be it. I think my ratings are fair, considering this place has lost nearly everything I used to find appealing. TBF, they have generous and varied outdoor seating, and the Old South Pearl Street location is appealing. Just don't expect much out of their coffee. ** in retrospect, they almost certainly offer an espresso grind for such
Disappointment strikes today. Stellas has eliminated wifi in an attempt to go a new direction of "connection and presence". It's their business, but it's tragic as a patron who has sat at Stellas to study, obtain a degree, and currently come to do lot of work while enjoying countless cups of coffee and tasty treats... This change will completely prevent me from returning to one of the only cool coffee shops in Denver as a regular. Tragic decision and for what it's worth I don't think it's very savvy.. but again i'm not the owner, I wish they didn't do it and I think its going to result in a steeper than expected decline of attendance. It's a dagger to a classic Denver staple for students and people trying to be productive who do not want go to Starbucks but instead tuck away into a cool nook and work hard. You may read this and say "good riddance this is exactly what we want" but to quote a classic proverb: "If it's not broken you don't fix it." It feels like a Cracker Barrel shift.. out of touch with the people who love Stellas for what it is. Thank you for over a decade of good years prior. I really do hate taking this off of my go to list of locations to get work done day or night and sorry for 1 star, Stellas. Good luck.
Chill little café with a nice vibe. The outdoor seating is great when the weather’s good, perfect for hanging out. Coffee is tasty and served generous, no weak pours. Snacks are solid too — nothing crazy but good quality. Staff is friendly and service is smooth. Prices are fair, not cheap but reasonable for what you get. And the location is super convenient, easy to stop by. Overall a cute spot worth checking out.
Super cute coffee house in a great location. Food was OUTSTANDING! The drinks were another story, unfortunately. 2 in our party got iced dirty chais and they were SO spicy that they couldn't drink them. They literally burned their throats from the spice. The pumpkin spice latte tasted like pumpkin puree put in coffee. Not much cream or spice at all. The caramel machiato one person in our group got was spot on and super yummy. We had an apple scone that was soooo amazing and yummy. One person had the avocado toast on an everything bagel and she said it may be the best she's ever had. Another had the breakfast sandwich on a bagel with egg, cheese and bacon and it was so tasty. Our last person had a prosciutto sandwich on a croissant. It was very, very good. Overall the beautiful coffee shop, deck area, food and staff were super! Just the expectation on coffee was unfortunately a disappointment. If you don't like spicy, DO NOT get the Chai! I was bummed because I really wanted to like everything about this fun place!
Met a dear mentee here for a coffee. Absolutely magnificent atmosphere; enormous place, lots of different types of seating. There was even a bride & groom that came through to take photos (good sign & good luck!) I must say, I was not so impressed with the cold brew (though that very well may have been my fault for ordering it with almond milk!)
